Weekly Athletic Update, 01/18/18

As advertised the marquee matchup of the week pitted two undefeated teams squaring up against each other on Rowe Court. St. Andrew’s School (Barrington, RI) and Worcester Academy brought identical 11-0 records into Saturday’s game and only one team could emerge unblemished. When the final horn sounded it was the balance and depth of WA prevailing with a four-point victory. Determined to take away WA’s main weapon, Aliyah Boston, the home town team took advantage of open looks and put four players in double-digits to compliment the 25-point, 15-rebound effort from Boston. Earlier in the week after a sluggish start, WA slipped past Marianapolis Prep (54-47) as Boston scored 30 points and on Wednesday the Hilltoppers powered past Deerfield.

Girls Ice Hockey had a full week with three games and came away 2-0-1 with wins over Portsmouth Abbey (5-3) and Groton (8-3) and a 1-1 tie with Phillips Exeter. The tie with Exeter came as a result of a last second goal but the headline of the week came from senior co-captain Mickey Sindoris who registered 5 goals in Friday’s 8-3 win at the Groton School.

Boys Ice Hockey held a 1-0 lead heading into the final period against Williston but things unraveled in the final 18 minutes as the visitors from Western Mass pulled away for a 4-1 triumph. Undeterred, the Hilltoppers played perhaps their finest 2-way game of the season outlasting Princeton Day School 4-3 to avenge an opening round loss back in December at the PCD Holiday Tournament.

Boys Basketball dropped an 85-75 road decision to AA rival Proctor despite placing three players in double digits. Mitch Doherty (22), Quest Harris (21), and Jordan McAllister (20) led the offensive attack but the Hilltoppers couldn’t keep the hosts at bay. On Saturday, WA travelled to Boston for the BABC Showcase as they tipped off against Class AAA power New Hampton School. Tied 30-30 at halftime, the Hilltoppers experienced a scoring drought in the 2nd stanza and fell 83-66.

Varsity 2 Basketball had a busy week as well dropping road contests to STM ((76-52) and St. Andrew’s School (50-34) and then at home to the Middlesex School on Saturday.

The WA Wrestling team is getting to know the landscape of New England as it continues to journey far and wide for meets. On Wednesday it was off to Connecticut for a quad meet and on Saturday the team travelled to St. Paul’s (New Hampshire) for yet another quad meet that was punctuated by a nice team win over the Tilton School.

The downhill season has finally commenced as the WA Ski team travelled to Mount Wachusett on Wednesday for the 1st of many CMSL races to be held mid-week. Top performances for the Hilltoppers were turned in by Max Glickman, Jack Baker, and CC Collins on the boys’ side and Gabby Gavala and Olivia Cyr on the girls’ side.

Varsity Swim raced at Milton Academy on Saturday and both teams came out on the short side, the boys by a 98-73 count and the girls, 90-77. Despite the setbacks there were multiple WA swimmers posting PR’s and we had two double event winners on the boys side. Kevin Arpin won the 200 free and the 100 fly while Ron Finkelberg took 1st place in the 200 IM and the 100 breast stroke.

Our sub-varsity basketball teams were busy as well with the frosh team splitting two contests (loss to St. John’s and an overtime win at Auburn HS), our JV Girls team (eagerly awaiting their 1st win of the season) taking Loomis-Chaffee to the wire (30-27 loss) and our JV Boys team dropping two games to the Rectory School and Deerfield.
