                                                Weekly Athletics Update—October 7, 2022

  • Boys’ varsity soccer continues to roll as they secured two huge wins at home this week against Loomis Chaffee School on Thursday and Avon Old Farms Saturday afternoon. The team trailed by a 1-0 score against L-C before exploding for 5 2nd half goals in an impressive offensive display. TJ Liquori ’23 continues his torrid scoring pace with two goals to fuel the win. Nate Yurkovic, Nash Barlow, and Matt Vogel all found the back of the net as the Hilltoppers rallied for am impressive win. On Saturday, the home team responded well in front of a large gathering and prevailed by a 2-1 count over a strong AOF team. The team travels to Pomfret on Monday and Phillips Exeter on Wednesday.

  • On a spectacular Fall afternoon, the Varsity Football ran away from Austin Prep by a 25-7 score. Gaskill Field provided a nice setting for the 1st ever meeting between these two schools (Austin Prep a recent addition to NEPSAC and to the Evergreen League). The Hilltoppers capitalized on a late 2nd quarter score to ease into half time with a comfortable margin and ran a ball control 2nd half offense that kept the visitors from the North Shore at bay. Offense wins games and it was fun to see QB Alexander Emery ’24 connect with a talented group of wideouts, but the defense shined on this afternoon as well. JJ Stien ’24, AJ Grniet’24 made several noteworthy plays and a host of interior lineman controlled the game in the trenches as the Hilltoppers scored an impressive victory to move to 2-1 on the season. St. Luke’s School (New Canaan, CT.) will host the Hilltoppers Saturday afternoon with a 3:30 p.m. kick-off.

  • Field hockey had a busy week as they squeezed three games into a tight window. On Thursday the week started with a tough 4-0 road defeat at the Winsor School. Undeterred, the team bounced back with two convincing home victories over Dana Hall School (6-1) and Wilbraham & Monson School on Saturday. An Oskee-Weekend crowd was treated to an offensive outburst as the Hilltoppers rolled behind two-goal performances from Bridget Fitzgerald ’25, Ally Gray ’23 and co-captain Gina Richard in the big win over W & M. Bridget Fitzgerald was recognized as the game MVP for her performance!

  • Volleyball had two impressive victories as they soared past Suffield (2nd time this Fall) on Wednesday by a 3-1 count and cruised in three sets on Saturday against Wilbraham & Monson Academy. The team seems to have found its collective stride and will look to continue on that path on Wednesday when they entertain the Pomfret School at 4:00 p.m. on Rowe Court.

  • Girls’ soccer squared off against a talented Choate team on Wednesday afternoon to kick off their week and fell by a 1-0 score. NMH provided the opposition on Saturday out at New Balance Field and proved to be no match as the Hilltoppers delighted a nice crowd gathered for Oskee-Weekend. The mid-season schedule is light this week for the team as they will rest, recover, and gain additional momentum heading into Saturday’s home match with Dexter-Southfield School on Saturday. Game time is slated for 3:00 pm at Morse Field.

  • Both cross country teams raced at the Emmons Cross Country course at New Balance Field on Saturday against the Winchendon School. Results were being tallied as we went to press.

  • Varsity Crew raced on Sunday morning in the New England Regional Championships. WA entered 3 boats in the two-day event and saw positive results from all, including the Boys’ Varsity 1 boat finishing 7th out of a 14-team field. The Varsity 2 boys’ boat and the Girls’ Novice boat all had times that were indicative of the training and hard work they have invested in the Crew program. Nice work!

  • JV volleyball scored an impressive win over Wilbraham & Monson, bolstered by an 8-service run from Zaina Mwangi ’26 to help secure their 1st win of the season.

  • JV boys’ soccer dropped two contests during the week including a riveting 3-2 loss on Saturday to the Pomfret School in an entertaining game at Gaskill Field.

  • MS flag football ran past Moses Brown in an impressive display of offensive Football on Thursday afternoon on Gaskill Field.

  • MS co-ed soccer is rounding into form as they grabbed a tidy 6-2 win over the Nativity School on Wednesday and then rallied to tie Rectory (5-5) in Connecticut on Thursday afternoon.

  • The 1st ever MS volleyball match was also a success as the team competed well in a match against the Rectory School. The final score was 2-1 with Rectory earning a hard-fought victory.
