Worcester Holds On To Defeat Winchendon
Holding a wire-to-wire lead until the final few minutes, WA held on for a big league win over rival Winchendon School, 88-81.
Senior guard Dan Becil (New York, NY) & post-graduate guard Jake Shapiro (Los Angeles, CA) lead the first-half charge, as WA went into the locker room with a 49-33 lead. Becil scored 14 in the first-half, while Shapiro added 13.
A balanced scoring attack and timely stops catapulted the Hilltoppers in the second half. Behind some hot outside shooting, Winchendon roared all the way back to tie the game with two minutes left. But baskets by junior guard Kayvaun Mulready (Worcester, MA) & junior wing TJ Power (Shrewsbury, MA) and key free throws down the stretch sealed the deal for WA.
Becil & Mulready each scored 19 points. Power added 17, while junior guard Tre Norman (Boston, MA) scored 14. Shapiro finished with 13.
Worcester moves to 18-7 overall and 13-4 in NEPSAC Class AA. We will host Senior Night at 5pm on Wednesday as Rowe Court plays host to a big league matchup between the Hilltoppers and Cushing Academy.
