Behind stifling defense and a key second half run, WA defeated South Kent School, 62-49, at the National Prep School Invitational at Rhode Island College on Saturday.
South Kent got off to a big lead, but WA crawled back behind 3-pointers from post-graduate guard Jake Shapiro (Los Angeles, CA), senior guard Dan Becil (New York, NY), junior guard Kayvaun Mulready (Worcester, MA) & junior wing TJ Power (Shrewsbury, MA). WA recovered to take a 26-25 lead into the half.
The Hilltoppers took off following halftime, going on a 19-0 run over the first four minutes to take command of the game. Junior guard Tre Norman (Boston, MA) scored on two quick layups, then drilled a triple in transition. Becil then hit three 3-pointers in a row to catapult the Hilltoppers ahead by double digits, a lead they would not give up for the game.
Becil lead WA with 17 points. Norman scored 13 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, handed out 6 assists & netted 5 steals. Mulready chipped in 12 for the Hilltoppers.
This is the second victory of the season for Worcester over a NEPSAC AAA team. Worcester improves to 14-5 overall.
The Hilltoppers will be on the road for three games next week, beginning with a contest against Phillips Exeter Academy on Wednesday at 5pm.
