Weekly Athletic Update, 1/14/2019

Boys’ Basketball is off to the best start in school history (13-0) securing a AA league win over Proctor (94-91) and a AAA road win over the New Hampton School by an 83-71 count. In one of the most memorable contests in recent years WA stormed back from a double-digit deficit and hung on for a home win over a tough Proctor team on Wednesday. On Saturday, 5 Hilltoppers scored in double digits (Mitch Doherty a team high 28 points) as WA extended its unblemished record. The team will have a week to prepare for its next contest, an away game at Phillips Andover.
 - The girls’ basketball team continued their dominance as well remaining undefeated with a hard fought 50-39 home win over Marianapolis Prep (Bella Nascimento led with 14 points), a 62-26 win over Loomis-Chaffee and a 63-46 win in Rhode Island over the St. Andrew’s School. Junior guard Leliani Rodriquez poured in a team high 16 points in the road win over St. Andrew’s. The Hilltoppers face perhaps their most challenging contest to date on Wednesday when Tabor Academy visits Rowe Court for a 3:45 pm contest.
 - Junior Varsity girls’ basketball stretched their unbeaten string to 6 games with a perfect 3-0 mark on the week. Perhaps their toughest challenge thus far was against St. Andrew’s on Saturday but the offensive tandem of Callie Harvey (13 points) and Kelsie Wandyes (17) propelled the team to their 5th road win of the young season. Congratulations to the team and to Coach Jay Leonard in his 1st year at the helm.
 - Varsity swim had a very competitive meet on Saturday with Milton Academy dropping nearly similar 52-42 (52-41) scores on the boys’ and girls’ side respectively.  - Boys’ Varsity hockey played well but dropped a 3-2 OT decision to the Princeton Day School on Saturday at WIC.  - Girls’ Hockey finished the week with a 1-1 tie Friday at Groton and a 7-1 home victory over Portsmouth Abbey on Saturday. Wednesday’s travel to Exeter saw the visitors fall by a 4-0 count. Pomfret visits the WIC on Wednesday and a road trip to NYA on Saturday will conclude a busy stretch!
vWrestling won their 1st match of the year on Wednesday with a win over Marianapolis Prep then followed that up with a nice showing at the Williston Northampton School on Saturday. Mike Berberian (1st), Jared Bushnell (2nd) and Aidan Ormsby (2nd) all placed for the Hilltoppers.
 - Varsity 2 basketball went 1-2 in a busy week, squeaking past Gann Academy (69-61), losing a 62-57 OT decision to league rival St. Andrew’s and then being handled at the Middlesex School by a 66-42 count.
