We’ve nearly hit the half way point of the fall season and games are coming at a fast and furious pace. Early season depth issues and the injury bug have impacted a number of teams including Varsity Football who lost for the 2nd consecutive weekend.
On Saturday a fairly healthy Football team traveled to Deerfield Academy for a Class A encounter but by days end the injury list had grown and Deerfield had secured a convincing 34-8 home victory. The task to find the winners circle will be a challenge this weekend as the Hilltoppers travel to UMASS’ McGuirk Stadium to tangle with St. Thomas More in a 7:00 pm matchup.
Girls’ Field Hockey won their 3rd consecutive contest as senior Alexis Cagan (this weeks Co-Athlete of the Week) poured in 5 goals leading the Hilltoppers to wins over Wilbraham & Monson and Dana Hall. St. George’s School will provide the opposition on Wednesday as the team looks to build momentum for a strong finish.
Despite a strong defensive effort (Pomfret scored late in the contest on one of their 1st shots on goal) Boys’ Varsity soccer started a challenging week on a tough note in a 1-0 loss to Pomfret. Wednesday’s 1-0 win at Morse Field over defending Class A champion Loomis gave the team the confidence and impetus required to run past a strong Avon Old Farms team on Saturday afternoon by a 4-2 count. Senior Ethan Boileau (Co-Athlete of the Week) had the game winner against Loomis and two timely scores against AOF. Exeter is up next for the surging Hilltoppers.
Coach Jen Marino’s youthful squad had a terrific week starting with a 1-0 road conquest over Pomfret and then a big Class A win over NMH by a 2-1 count. Kelli Buckley had the game winner against Pomfret and scored the opening goal in Saturday’s win at Morse Field over NMH.
Girl’s X-C continues their fine season finishing in 2nd place at Suffield last weekend as multiple WA runners posted PR’s in the meet.
Michelle Liu (6 aces) and Bella Nascimento (16 digs) led the way in a nice win over Suffield Academy on Wednesday. It was a nice response to an earlier setback at the hands of the Tigers. On Saturday the team traveled to Wilbraham & Monson and collectively rose to the challenge in securing a 3-1 win over the host squad.
On the sub-varsity front, JV Volleyball split two matches, JV girls’ soccer earned 1st year coach Jacqui Feraco her 1st W as Ella Budzinski ’24 poured home the winner in a 2-1 victory at Pomfret and the JV boys’ soccer team dropped one and tied one (at Pomfret).
Middle School Field hockey is flying high coming off two stellar wins and the MS x-c team, despite low numbers continues to impress in early season meets including a 2nd place finish behind Bancroft in this weeks trip-match. Pete Smith’s soccer team found their 1st blemish as they dropped a 5-1 decision to a talented Rectory team, this on the heels of an impressive 2-1 win over Hillside School.
