Weekly Athletic Update

Rainy, cold conditions have been the norm and game preparation and actual competitions have been impacted. Our Spring athletes and coaches manage to dance around the rain drops, battle the windy elements and do so with a hearty approach that is indicative of their resilient nature and competitive spirit. With a mere 4 weeks remaining in the Spring 2024 season, we remain optimistic that conditions will improve, and performances and results will mirror the hard work exhibited by all. 
 
    • Our Crew team raced for the 1st time on a choppy Lake Quinsigamond on Saturday and the results and assessments will serve to guide our coaches and racers as they prepare for Race # 2, next Sunday, 2:00 pm at the Lake. 

    • Baseball went 2-1 during the week, beating Cushing on Wednesday by a 10-4 score and then splitting a doubleheader with Exeter on Saturday. The Hilltoppers took the opener by a 6-3 count behind a solid outing from Mav Rizy and then fell in the nightcap, 10-4 as they lost for the 1st time in the young season. Deerfield will provide the opposition on Wednesday at Blackburn Field as the “home stand” continues at 3:30 pm.

    • Softball dropped their 1st contest with a 16-5 road loss to Loomis-Chaffee School on Saturday and will finally play a home contest – weather permitting – on Wednesday when they host Suffield Academy at 3:30 pm. 

      • Track and Field travelled as well on Saturday and both teams battled the rain and sleet at times in a quad meet at NMH. On the Girls’ side, WA went 2-2 registering wins against Cushing and Marianapolis and dropping a pair of events to host NMH and St. Paul's. 


      Maryah Muldrow had impressive performances in the 300 Hurdles (2
nd
      ) and the Triple Jump (2
nd
      ) as did Mugure Mwangi in the Discus (2
nd
      ) and Beth Eisenburg in the 100 Hurdles (2
nd
      ). The boys took home 3d place slipping past Cushing but NMH and St. Paul’s prevailed with some impressive performances. Liam Shields had a terrific meet with a 1
st
       in the 400 and a 3
rd
       in the 200. Johann Innis-Grant grabbed a 1
st
       in the 110 Hurdles and a 4
th
       in the 300 Hurdles while junior Harry Martel earned quality points with a 2
nd
       in the Pole Vault and a 2
nd
       in the Javelin. 


  • Girls’ Tennis had a marathon match against Kingswood-Oxford School on Wednesday in West Hartford and battled one of the top programs in the division before falling. Ysabel Lobo emerged victorious with a 7-6, 7-6 singles victory in her match and exemplified the tenacity and competitiveness of this group. 

  • Girls’ Lacrosse was impressive on Saturday afternoon as they ran past Marianapolis Prep (15-6 score) to secure their 1st win of the season. 

  • Boys’ Lacrosse was on the road travelling to Winchendon on Wednesday and Tilton on Saturday. Both contests came down to the final minute of play and both resulted in tough 1-goal losses, 10-9 at Winchendon and 17-16 at Tilton. The team has yet another difficult game on Wednesday afternoon when they host Portsmouth Abbey out at New Balance Field. Game time is 3:30 pm. 

  • Golf team dropped a Tri-Match on Wednesday as Williston and Cushing eased past the visiting Hilltoppers. Despite a 1 over par scintillating performance from senior Tyler Hughes, WA dropped a Match play competition on Thursday to a quality St. Mark’s team. The 6-0 result was in no way indicative of the highly competitive performance of the WA team. 
 
Around the Rim:
The Varsity Club dinner will take place this Thursday evening on campus as recipients, Michelle Boland ’05 and David Ball ’03 will be honored.
