Varsity Club, Championships, and Recognition

Weekly Athletics Update

The season is underway and the pace will be non-stop until mid-May when we’ll put a cap on the Athletic year. There are certainly lots of games to play in the interim and opportunities for our student-athletes and teams to shine.

  • Varsity Baseball rang up a pair of impressive wins pushing past the MacDuffie School on Wednesday and then Belmont Hill School on Friday. The friendly confines of Blackburn diamond at Gaskill Field offer the Hilltoppers a beautiful setting and the bats have responded in kind as the multiple run contests will attest. Polar Park was the setting for a Saturday morning league contest against Phillips Andover and the pitching matchup was a gem. Junior Mav Rizy was outstanding but was matched pitch for pitch by Andover’s crafty starter as the Hilltoppers were stymied at the plate. The combined 1-hitter (a Gabe Pitts 1 run double in the 6thinning) was all the home team could muster on this day, leaving WA with their 1st loss of the young season.

  • Varsity Softball dropped a road game at the Brooks School (8-7) on Wednesday but roared back with an impressive offensive display as it pushed past both Marianapolis Prep (14-3) and the St. Mark’s School (15-1)  in impressive fashion. Talent, team spirit and chemistry will propel this group to a banner season. Charlotte Constantine hit a grand slam and Elise Siciliano went 3 for 3 with a solo round tripper as well in the win over St. Mark’s.

  • Congrats to 1st year coach, Connor Johnson who guided the Boy’s Lacrosse team to a season-opening 13-5 triumph over Suffield Academy on Saturday afternoon. It appears the Hilltoppers have plenty of firepower on the offensive end and will cause problems for opponents with their enthusiasm and inspired play. The team travels to Winchendon on Wednesday with a 3:30 contest on tap.

  • Varsity Girls’ lacrosse travelled to RI to square off against perennial prep power, Portsmouth Abbey and dropped their opening tilt in a fairly competitive match. The team will look to get on track at Morse Field on Wednesday when they host Cushing at 3:30 pm.

  • Boys’ Tennis will win their share of matches during the season with a veteran-laden squad led by tri-captains, Andre Mukhin, Omar Saber and Nathan Lee. To date the team has played well but dropped their 1st two matches against Pomfret School and St. Paul’s.

  • Girls’ Tennis has an early season gauntlet with some of the stronger NE teams providing early season challenges to a team that will compete hard and challenge for a post-season NEPSAC berth in Class B. An early loss to St. Mark’s did not deter the squad from rebounding with a shutout win over Cushing Academy on Saturday. A strong K-O squad will travel to Worcester on Wednesday for a 3:30 pm match.

  • Boats are in the water and our Crew team raced on Saturday at Lake Quinsigamond against Shrewsbury and Medford. Early season work will eventually round this group into a competitive team and a Saturday afternoon (4:00 pm race) will afford the next opportunity for success.

  • JV Baseball braved a couple of cold early games and split two contests, dropping the opener against Andover and then rebounding with a 15-9 slugfest over Cushing. They will travel to Dexter-Southfield on Wednesday for a 4:00 pm game.
