Weekly Athletics Update–January 16, 2023

Boys’ varsity basketball won three games during the week with comfortable wins over Phillips Andover (Wednesday), Loomis-Chaffee (Friday) and the Masters School on Sunday in Quincy, Ma. The depth and quality of the roster was on full display as 13 players scored in Friday’s 30-point win over Loomis and all 15 players who dressed, scored in Sunday’s 22-point win over Masters. Junior guard Kayvaun Mulready hit 5-3 pointers in the 1st half en route to a 21-point effort as the Hilltoppers ran away from their AA competitor in the BABC Showcase event.
 
  • Girls’ varsity basketball also compiled three nice wins during the week stretching their streak to 4. The week began with a successful trip to Connecticut and a solid performance in a 64-50 win at Loomis. Senior guard Oluchi Okananwa led the scoring parade with 21 and was ably assisted by Kailee McDonald and Cam Rust, also in double figures on the afternoon. A nice trip away from the rigors of the NEPSAC circuit saw our team venture to Brooklyn, NY to play in the Rose Classic over the weekend. The team emerged victorious in a low scoring affair on Saturday (46-32) and then turned up the volume on the offensive end in a thrilling 81-74 shoot out victory over Putnam Science on Sunday.

  • Boys’ varsity 2 hoops won a pair of contests with a 67-60 come from behind win on Wednesday  over St. Andrew’s School (Brendan Roy a career high 21 points) and then slugged past Deerfield Academy on Saturday morning on Rowe Court. The team plays 3 contests in the week ahead, starting with a road trip to play St. Thomas More on Wednesday in Colchester, CT.

  •  JV girls’ basketball continue their winning ways and fine overall play with a win at Loomis-Chaffee on Wednesday. 

  • Varsity swim team raced twice during the week. The girls’ split a pair of meets, emerging victorious at Dexter-Southfield School (57-34) and then dropped a 35-55 event at Milton. The boys’ dropped both races, falling by a 39-46 measure at Dexter and then fell short at Milton, 27-47. Claire Puffer ’24 and Elise Drake ’27 had a noteworthy 1-2 finish in the 100 fly at D-S and significant PBT’s (Personal Best Times) were recorded by members of both squads. 

  • Varsity girls’ ice hockey dropped a pair of 3-2 contests during the week, losing in OT at Phillips Exeter and then at Portsmouth Abbey on Saturday. The team will look to rebound on Wednesday when it hosts St George’s School at 4:00 pm

  • Boys’ hockey scored an impressive road win at Williston on Wednesday by a 4-2 score. Junior forward Connor Dozois had a hat trick and senior goalie, Brandon Prior had 39 saves in the big win. On Saturday, the team travelled to Maine and came up on the short end of a Holt League contest by the same 4-2 count. 

  • Although the warm, wet conditions were hardly ideal for racing, Friday saw our ski team compete for the 1st time this season in the Central Mass Ski League. Co-captains’ Kayzie Salmon and Harrison Martell led the way respectively for their teams. Around the Rim:
The excitement builds for the TD Garden event on Saturday, January 21st. The boys’ varsity basketball team will play the top-rated team in New England, Brewster Academy at 7:30 pm. It is the 1st time a Worcester Academy team will play on the famed Garden parquet and interest is high as Worcester Academy alums and fans prepare for this special evening in Boston.
