Varsity Club, Championships, and Recognition

Weekly Athletic Update

  • Varsity Softball has come out of the gates in top form as they captured the initial two contests of the ’24 season. Mother nature created field problems out at New Balance over the weekend, but this did not deter the team. Games were moved to a pair of road contests and the Hilltoppers responded beautifully with back-to-back 10-run outbursts. On Friday afternoon, Gabby San Inocenico ’24 hit a pair of home runs in a 10-3 victory at Portsmouth Abbey. Less than 24 hours later, the team was playing a league outing at the Miss Porter’s School and this conquest followed the same script with a 10-2 outcome. WA will try to keep the bats popping on Wednesday when they travel to Deerfield Academy for a 4:00 pm game.

  • Rain and windy conditions caused the majority of contests during the week to be canceled but kudos to our girls’ varsity lacrosse team who braved the elements on Friday and Saturday, only to come up short in both games. Portsmouth Abbey and Suffield had enough answers in the offensive zone to keep the host Hilltoppers at bay who will now look to climb into the win column on Wednesday when they travel to Cushing Academy for a 3:30 pm contest. Hayley McNeal, has jumped in the nets for the 1st time and has excelled in the early going.

  • Boys’ Lacrosse had a nice bounce back road win at Suffield Academy on Saturday, holding on for a 16-13 victory. Seniors Will Masterson (6 goals, 1 assist) and Parker Greene (4 goals, 2 assists) powered the Hilltoppers to their initial win of the young season. Winchendon School will host WA on Wednesday afternoon, 3:30 pm start.

  • Girls’ Tennis finally got their season started with a convincing win over Cushing Academy on Saturday. The match, played throughout an intermittent shower showed the depth and quality of the team with steady performances in both the doubles and singles matches.

  • Boys’ Tennis has faced a couple of powerful Class A teams to start the season and despite a competitive, close match on Saturday the St Paul’s School showed their mettle in pulling away from the Hilltoppers.

  • Golf and Crew have yet to play this Spring, but weather permitting both teams will be in action during the coming week.
