Weekly Athletic Update, 4/19/16

Edward Reilly
As expected our Girls Varsity Track & Field team is off to a blazing start, undefeated in the early going and looking very much like a medal contender later in the spring. Not to be outdone, our Boys Track & Field group stands undefeated as well at the moment gearing up for Wednesday’s important contest with NMH and Cushing here at Gaskill Field.

  • In separate meets Tabor and Kingswood-Oxford provided the toughest opposition for our teams. Junior Dervin Hylton exploded with a jump of 19.5 in the long jump and individual winners against Tabor included Brice Santos ’16 in the 110M hurdles and Matt Adiletta ’17 in the 400m.
  • Double winners for the lady Hilltoppers included Christa Moore ’17 in the Pole Vault and 100m, Hannah Lowe ’16 in the Discuss and Javelin, Katrina Gangi ’16 in the long jump and horizontal jumps, and Mia Conte in the 220 and 400m.
  • Boys Lacrosse opened the week with a solid road win at LCA (7-2) but faltered with back to back losses to Winchendon School 6-4) and Vermont Academy (14-3). The team will have a week to get things together as they are off until Saturday when NMH comes to town.
  • Girls Lacrosse appears to be jelling posting nice wins against Winchendon (15-5 on the road) and Beaver Country Day School, 13-9 at Morse Field on Friday evening. Alivia Roy ’17 continues to lead the scoring parade for the Hilltoppers.
  • Senior hurler Morgan McSweeney threw a gem in the opening game of Saturday’s twin bill against Exeter propelling the hometown team to a 2-1 victory. The nightcap proved to be unkind as the visitors from the North country got their bats going with a 10-5 win over the Hilltoppers. League play continues on Wednesday with a home contest against Deerfield at Blackburn Field.
  • Coach Bolden’s Softball team had a nice week (3-0) as senior captain Timary Malley had multiple hit games in wins over Exeter (9-3), Marianapolis Prep (14-2) and Deerfield (20-5). Good to see the entire roster swinging the bats and scoring runs in bunches. Suffield Academy will provide the opposition on Wednesday at New Balance Field.
  • Julian Kates ’20 shot a 41, earning Medalsit honors in Wednesday’s golf match against Cushing and the golf team followed up that win with a 4-3 victory on Friday afternoon against St. Mark’s School. The team will travel to NMH on Wednesday for a key match up.
  • On the tennis front, the Boys Varsity Tennis dropped road contests to Moses Brown (6-3) and Portsmouth Abbey and will look to heat up this week as they host the Williams School on Wednesday at the Gaskill Courts.
  • Amy Herlihy’s Varsity Tennis team dropped their lone match of the week as Dana Hall prevailed 6-1. A Wednesday road trip to Wilbraham & Monson looms next for the squad.
  • Crew put their 1st boats on the line in Sunday’s race at Lake Quinsigamond, but both boats faded in the stretch run as the Canterbury School, Hopkins School, and the Bancroft School all crossed the finish line in front of the Hilltopper boats.
  • On the sub-varsity level, Coach Zak Johnson’s JV Baseball team remains undefeated picking up 8-6 victories over both Dexter School and Portsmouth Abbey School during the week. The bats and the pitching have been pretty solid for the team who look to make improvements in the fielding and throwing areas as the season progresses.
