Weekly Athletic Update, 04/28/15

Ed Reilly
It is a bitter sweet time of year for many of our seniors balancing their final days at school and finishing their responsibilities in the classroom and on the playing fields. In typical fashion the month of April has come and gone and the last three weeks of the season are upon us. We are anxious to bring our 2015 Varsity Club honorees to campus on Thursday evening presenting Katrina Lacher ’94 and Obinna Ekezie ’95 with our highest Athletic award! It is a great time of year to bring together the past with the present as we also will recognize all our team captains from this past year!

The Varsity Baseball team is hitting on all cylinders as they build momentum for the end of season Blackburn Tournament (May 16). Currently sitting atop the league standings and fresh off a 4-3 road win over Tabor Academy on Saturday, the Hilltoppers continue to maximize good pitching, timely hitting and solid defense in their pursuit of another title. Senior Gus Culpo hurled 6 2/3 innings in the big win over the Seawolves on Saturday and junior Jon Crimmin knocked in the winning RBI with a two run single to propel the Hilltoppers past Tabor in their battle for 1st place. Earlier in the week, senior hurler Colin Duffley hurled a complete game gem as the Hilltoppers stormed past NMH.

Sean Chenevert’s Varsity Girls Lacrosse team continues their fine season registering a 10-8 home win on Saturday afternoon at Morse Field. Senior goalie Gianna Polito was outstanding with 17 saves and the trio of Freshman Shelia Gadbois, sophomore Alivia Roy and junior Jacki Gangi each rang up three goals in the big win. A 10-10 road tie with the Waring School started a successful 3 game stretch for the team and a mid-week 13-9 win over Providence Country Day School has the team poised to finish the season on a high note.

Wayne Bolden’s Varsity Softball team had two nice wins during the week running away from Marianapolis Prep at New Balance Field, 14-6 (sandwiched around a 5-1 road loss to Newton Country Day School) and blanking Suffield Academy on the road (8-0) as Melina Economos hurled a four-hitter and senior Caroline Knowles banged out three hits helping the Hilltoppers run their record to 6-2.

Katrina Gangi broke through and finally captured the school record in the long jump with a jump of 16’ 8 1/2” on Saturday in a tri-meet at Belmont Hill School. The girls triumphed over Rivers School, settled for a tie with Middlesex School and lost to Thayer on the afternoon. Senior Justus Harris ran away with the 100m (11.4) as the boys team grabbed a win over the Rivers School, but lost to both Middlesex and Thayer.

Boys Tennis dropped a pair of home contests losing a heartbreaker to Cushing Academy (5-4) and to Tabor on Saturday afternoon (7-2) while our girls team traveled to Wilbraham & Monson looking to rebound from a tough road loss to the Bancroft School on Wednesday. Despite a gallant effort and single wins from Natalie Dorogi and Alila Amangali, the Titans prevailed, 5-2.

Junior Maddie Belden fired a 39 helping the golf team secure a win, a 7-0 blanking of Marianapolis Prep at Raceway Golf Course.

The JV Baseball team continues their outstanding season as the pitching staff hurled two shutouts this past week while the bats produced double-digit runs in both outings. The JV Softball team battled to the final out in a well played 8-6 loss on Saturday against Marianapolis Prep, this on the heels of a convincing early week win over the St. George’s School.
