Weekly Athletic Update, 02/22/18

It was a busy week as NEPSAC Championships were held in two of our sports. Our ski team competed in the Class C Championships at Mt. Wachusett and our boys’ team came away with sterling performance capturing 3rd place overall. Max Glickman placed 8th overall in the GS and 4th in the SL to lead the way for the Hilltoppers who received strong support from Nick Lennox (12th in GS), Jack Baker (15th) and a host of other WA skiers. On the girls’ side (5th overall), Gabby Gavala continued her fine season with a 6th place finish in the SL and a 9th in the GS.

Juniors Jared Bushnell and Aidan Ormsby were our two representatives at the New England Wrestling Championships held over the weekend at Tabor Academy. Both Jared and Aidan qualified for this event off their stellar performances throughout the year as well as at last weekend’s Class A Wrestling Tournament.

The remarkable turnaround continues for our BV Hockey team who ran off three wins during the week (increasing their record to 16-6-2) as they pushed past the Groton School (7-3), Lawrenceville Academy (6-1) and the Hill School (4-2). The Hilltoppers have elevated their play down the stretch and find themselves in position to both secure the #1 seed in the Holt Conference Tournament as well as possibly securing a berth in the Division I Tournament next week.

Varsity Swim team prepared for their Championship (at Roger Williams University, March 3) with tune ups against Thayer and St. Sebastian’s and Dana Hall. Alex Crowthers won both the 100-yard free and the 100-yard backstroke and her teammate Yulia Borodovka captured the 200-yard individual medley as well as the 100- yard breaststroke powering WA past St. Sebastian’s School. On the boys’ side, Ron Finkleberg continues his fine run with wins in both the 200 free and the 100 free and Kevin Arpin showed his true colors with victories in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard butterfly.

Varsity Boys Basketball dropped a shootout to the St. Andrew’s School (95-84) here on Rowe Court on Wednesday, then travelled to Maine hoping to keep their play-off hopes alive but the Gould School emerged with a 95-90 overtime win, eliminating the team from tournament play. Class AAA Bridgton rolled past the Hilltoppers to complete the weekend trip on Sunday afternoon.

Girls Varsity Basketball sits atop the Class A standings courtesy of a thrilling road victory over the New Hampton School in New Hampshire on Saturday. Senior Keira Fernandez and sophomore Aliyah Boston led the way for the Hilltoppers who ran their record to a gaudy 18-1.

Girls Hockey continues to strive for home ice advantage in next week’s Division II Tournament. Saturday’s 4-0 shutout win over Class A Andover and Friday’s win at the Holderness School were sandwiched around a mid-week 4-3 overtime loss against the Winchendon School. The final weekend contests with the Canterbury School and Greenwich Academy will impact next week’s tournament seed.

Sub-varsity basketball teams struggled, and all will look to close out the year in the win column later this week. Varsity 2 team drew the #5 seed and will face off against St. Andrew’s School in Barrington, RI on Monday in a quarter-final Prep 6 contest.
