Weekly Athletic Update, 01/29/18

Our top-rated Girls Basketball team traveled outside the region over the weekend participating in the Mecca Showcase Tournament in the Bronx, New York. The event was played at the Gauchos Gymnasium, just two blocks from the famed Yankee Stadium and afforded our team and program the opportunity to play before a multitude of college coaches. After a day of travel on Saturday, Aliyah Boston once again led the way pushing the Hilltoppers past New Hope Academy by a score of 43-38. In a quick turnaround (11:30 am Sunday start) the Hilltoppers held on for an impressive four-point win over Bishop Ireton (Alexandria, Va) to make the weekend a clean sweep. Aliyah Boston ’19 and Keira Fernandes ’19 were the respective MVP’s in both contests. Sunday afternoons excursion to visit the 911 Memorial concluded a busy but productive trip for the team who will return to action Wednesday afternoon when they host Suffield Academy.

Congratulations to the JV Boys Basketball team who earned their 1st win of the season on Wednesday over the Hillside School. The freshman team took Cushing Academy right to the final minute on Saturday before bowing and the JV Girls Basketball team dropped their lone contest of the week to Pomfret on Wednesday.

Boys Ice Hockey captured two contests and dropped one during the week as they ramp up for the Holt Conference Tournament. Wednesday’s contest at Portsmouth Abbey looms as a critical Holt match-up.

Girls Ice Hockey traveled to Millbrook NY on Saturday and raced to a 5-1 win, this on the heels of a 2-0 Wednesday setback to the Brooks School. The Southfield School provides the opposition on Wednesday at the WIC with a 4:00 pm game time.

Aidan Ormsby and Jared Bushnell are both trying to firm up their potential seeds in the upcoming Class A Wrestling Championships as both won critical matches during the week against PEA and LCA.

Boys Varsity Basketball played their finest two-way game of the year in a convincing 79-59 win over AA rival Vermont Academy. Sophomore Quest Harris poured in 23 second-half points to propel the Hilltoppers. AAA matches with St. Thomas More and NMH found the WA contingent on the wrong side of the ledger. Two key AA match-ups loom in the upcoming week with road games against the Masters School and Cheshire Academy.

Multiple winners in Wednesday’s Swim meet included Kevin Arpin (50 and 100), Ron Finkleberg (200IM Medley and 500 free) and Cyrus Salmassi (100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke) as the boys’ breezed past PA by a 51-40 count The girls’ also won 47-38 and saw multiple improvements in times and performances. On Saturday both teams also rose to the occasion posting wins over Marianapolis Prep in a spirited meet.

Boys Varsity 2 Basketball’s offensive woes continue as they dropped league contests to STM and the Middlesex School. The team will have a week to prepare for Saturday’s match-up with Bradford Christian Academy on Saturday afternoon here at Rowe Court. Game time is 1:00 pm.

Gabby Gavala placed 2nd and 3rd in Friday’s CMSL races and was ably supported by Olivia Cyr and Brenna Snell who both scored in the top 20 while senior Max Glickman continues his dominance on the boys’ side with a 3rd place finish in both events.
