Weekly Athletic Update, 01/25/18

While the winter season often seems like an eternity, all of a sudden we’ve got a calendar that indicates otherwise. With but 5 weeks left in the regular season, WA teams are jockeying for play-off seeds and in some cases an opportunity to compete in the NEPSAC tournament. Three of our winter teams – swim, wrestling and ski – automatically qualify for post-season events (wrestling by virtue of a high finish in the Class A Tournament) as swim will compete the weekend of March 3 and ski will host the New England Division II championships at Mount Wachusett on February 16.

Boys Basketball will need a strong finish to qualify particularly with their remaining AA contests. Junior Matt Corey provided the offensive fire power in a 77-57 home victory over Phillips Andover on Wednesday, but the Hilltoppers fell to AA Cheshire by an 80-67 count on Sunday.

Juniors Aidan Ormsby and Jared Bushnell were victorious in a home tri-meet on Saturday against Thayer and St. Mark’s and both are hoping to peak as the end of season tournaments approach. The Class A tournament will be held at the Hyde School in Hyde, Maine on Saturday, February 10.

Aliyah Boston ’20 and Keira Fernandes ’18 provided the scoring punch as the # 1 ranked Hilltoppers slipped past Noble and Greenough on Saturday by a 58-54 count.

The high flying WA Girls Ice Hockey team ran past both Pomfret (7-1) and NYA (5-1) and continue to build momentum and a glowing resume as they head towards the play-offs.

Varsity 2 Basketball placed three players in double digits (Myles Guerrier with 18, Sam Odjidja 12 and Noah Pestania 11) but fell for the 2nd time this season to the MacDuffie School by a 65-50 count. The team will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday as they host the STM team.

In a storm shortened week both JV basketball teams dropped games as they continue to look for that breakthrough. The freshman team had their lone game cancelled due to the snow and our swim team had the week off but will be back in the pool on Wednesday as they host Portsmouth Abbey School at 3:30 pm.
