Athletic Weekly Update, 10/31/17

Girls Varsity Soccer travelled to previously unbeaten Hotchkiss on Wednesday and came away with an impressive 2-0 victory. Seniors Anisha Hill and Allison Pestania scored for the Hilltoppers. On Saturday, the team travelled once again and held serve with a comfortable 2- 0 win over the host Milton Mustangs. WA will host Tabor on Wednesday afternoon at New Balance Field with an early 2:45 pm start.

James Proctor’s squad slammed home two late scores in a tighter than it appears 4-2 road win at Deerfield on Wednesday and settled for a 1-1 draw Saturday against KUA. Phillips Andover will provide the opposition on Wednesday as team travels to Andover for a 2:45 pm contest.

Cross Country teams were off on the road again this weekend participating in the Shaler Invitational at the Williston School. The girls’ team finished 4th out of 11 schools with Coco Arcand pacing the Hilltoppers (Coco broke the course record) and the boys’ team took a 9th place finish as Zhangeldy Rakhimbekov and captain Lucas Vining-Recklitis led the way. Both squads will run at Wilbraham & Monson on Saturday as they gear up for the New England Class B Championships which will take place at the Berkshire School.

Varsity Volleyball got back on the winning track in huge fashion this week. On Wednesday, they took a straight set match against cross-town rival Bancroft, and followed this up with their best performance of the season as they eased past the Rivers School 3-2 on Saturday. The 2-hour long match was close throughout and fine play by Georgianna Angelis, Michelle Yoon, and Ilyana Stuart proved decisive for the hometown Hilltoppers.

The JV Boys Soccer team continues its fine play of late pushing past NMH 3-1 as Nick Ng scored two goals in helping the team improve to 4-3-1 on the season.

Captain Stella Gray scored the equalizer with just under 5 minutes to play as the JV Girls Soccer team rallied for a 3-3 tie with Milton on Saturday afternoon.

Field Hockey spotted Deerfield an early 3-0 lead which proved insurmountable in Wednesday’s 4-1 home loss. The offense sputtered on Saturday as the Pomfret School scored the lone goal (in overtime) to eke past the visiting Hilltoppers, 1-0.

Football looked to get back on track as they travelled to Loomis-Chaffee Saturday evening, but came up on the short end of a 17-7 contest. Trailing by two scores early, sophomore QB Asa Floyd led the Hilltoppers to their only touchdown drive of the evening, but the Loomis defense stiffened and WA was kept at bay for the remaining minutes. The team will travel to Phillips Andover on Saturday for a 6:00 pm tilt.
