Weekly Athletic Update, 10/10/17

Good teams become great teams and produce terrific results when the depth and quality of individual performance grows as the season unfolds. Such appears to be the case for our Girls Cross Country team (17-3 overall) who won their 2nd Invitational tournament of this young season. The 1st place finish at the Suffield Gordon Glover Invitational was a tremendous team effort as mainstays Coco Arcand and Gabby Gavala again finished 1-2 but the 3rd and 4th place finishes for Fiona Price and Nicole Pietro were special as they each carved PR’s in bolstering yet another solid team effort!

Boys Soccer team responded well to their 1st loss of the season (a 4-0 road defeat at Loomis- Chaffee) racing past the Pomfret School (4-0) and Cushing Academy (5-0) as they pushed their record to 8-1–1. Kyle Brady scored three goals against Cushing and also had a tally against Pomfret to lead the way for the surging Hilltoppers.

The Field Hockey team is rounding nicely into form on the heels of a relatively easy Wednesday match against the Montrose School and a 1-1 tie with a tough, physical Wilbraham & Monson Academy. McKenzie Fahey scored the lone goal for the host Hilltoppers who threatened repeatedly to score the go ahead only to settle for the 1-1 draw. A solid 4-1 road win at the Dana Hall School, compliments of a 2-goal performance by co-captain Emily Ledoux, has the team poised for a strong finish!

Varsity Girls Soccer battled on even terms against Choate but gave up a late goal to fall 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon at the New Balance Field. An impressive road win at NMH on Saturday may be the jumpstart the team needs as they gear up for yet another play-off run. Senior striker Anisha Hill registered a hat trick in Saturday’s 5-2 win at NMH.

Football has run into a bit of tough luck with season-ending injuries to a number of frontline performers and despite some outstanding individual efforts the Class A schedule has proven to be a significant challenge. Deerfield provided the Oskee Weekend opposition and, true to form, the home town team gamely hung in the contest for a half, only to succumb to a 2nd half barrage that led to a 42-7 outcome.

Varsity Volleyball dropped a road match to Suffield on Wednesday, then fell at home on Saturday to Wilbraham & Monson Academy by a 3-1 count. The team travels to the Pomfret School on Wednesday.

JV Girls Soccer went 2-0 on the week with an impressive 4-0 shutout win over Pomfret on Wednesday and then cruised to a 6-0 victory at NMH on Saturday.

JV Boys Soccer split 2 games during the week losing at Loomis Chaffee on Wednesday before bouncing back with a nice come from behind win on Saturday against the Pomfret School.

Similarly, the JV Volleyball team went 1-1 on the week losing 2-1 to Suffield but bouncing back on Saturday to push their record to 5-4 overall with a 3 set victory over Wilbraham & Monson.

JV Football fell to 0-2 with a 20-6 loss to the Loomis-Chaffee School but looks to get back on track this week with a rematch against Doherty High School.
