Weekly Athletic Update, 5/24/17

Congratulations to the Baseball team who emerged victorious over the weekend in the Central New England Prep School  Baseball Championship. On a beautiful day for baseball on the campus of Brown University the Hilltoppers depth, enthusiasm and pitching proved decisive in wins over Exeter (5-1) and Andover (5-2). The 3rd seeded Hilltoppers received outstanding, complete game efforts from Joe Sacco in the opener and Pat Gallagher in the nightcap. The Hilltoppers were particularly sharp in the field and timely hits from a host of players paved the way for their 2nd championship in the past three seasons. Congratulations to Coach McNamara and his capable assistant coaching staff—Pat O’Donnell, Matt Baldwin, and Craig Doyle—as well as the 15 seniors and underclassmen who worked together to return the championship to Worcester Academy!

Although our Girls Tennis team lost to the King School in the 1st round of the Class C NEPSAC Championships, coaches Herlihy and Lu and the rest of the squad should be proud of their 1st ever Prep Championship appearance.  It was a significant achievement and a noteworthy year of individual and team accomplishments that should serve the program well in the years ahead!

Our Girls Track & Field team proudly stood on the podium in Saturday’s Division II Championship Meet at the Williston School. Our second place finish (right behind Thayer) was truly a team effort but front and center in leading the Hilltoppers were sophomore Lily Dumas (Division II Meet MVP), Mia Conte ’18, and Christa Moore (Team MVP) who each contributed multiple points in individual and team relay events. Congratulations to Lily Dumas ’19 who broke the school record in both the Long Jump and the 100 hurdles.

The Boys Track & Field team fared well (4th place overall) also as senior Matt Adiletta took a 1st in the 200, a second in the 100 and a third in the triple jump to cap off a brilliant career! Kudos to Sam Hatem ’17 who finished 2nd in the 800 while establishing a school record in that event.

Bob Thorn’s Varsity Golf team finished 9-2-1 as it completed perhaps the most successful season in school history with a solid win over the Winchendon School on Wednesday. Jack DiGeronimo shot his best round of the season carding a 39 at the always-challenging Cyprian Keyes Golf Course.

Despite dropping 2 out of their final 3 contests, it was another good year for the Girls Varsity Lacrosse team. On Wednesday, the steady trio of Grace McShea, Alivia Roy, and Sheila Gadbois (Team MVP) led the team to a 13-7 road victory at Beaver Country Day School. Congratulations to Alivia Roy ’17 and Sheila Gadbois ’18 who have been selected as Western New England Prep School Women’s Lacrosse All-Stars.
Varsity Softball dropped their final two contests of the 2017 season to finish 6-10 on the season.

Boys Lacrosse dropped their finale as well as Cushing Academy rolled to a victory at Morse Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Chuck Glassmire’s tenure as Head Boys Tennis coach ended on Saturday at the Williston School and his commitment to our kids and his passion for the sport he loves will be missed.  We’re likely to see Coach G in a spectator role at the courts next season – particularly on that one warm, balmy afternoon we seem to get each spring – and I know he joins us in welcoming Coach Colleen Carlson who will take over next season as our Head coach.
