Weekly Athletic Update, 5/16/17

Congratulations in order for the Girls Varsity Tennis team and Head Coach Amy Herlihy for their 1st ever invite to the New England Prep Class C Tennis Championships. Pairings and locations will be announced on Thursday and wins in their final two matches on the season could well improve their seed. The team continued their stellar season on Wednesday with a 6-1 home win over Beaver Country Day School.

Boys Varsity Golf team enjoyed their finest slate under long-time coach Bob Thorn and will reach the 9-win mark with a season ending victory on Wednesday against the Winchendon School. Andrew Tsai fired a 3 over 38 on Monday as the Hilltoppers squeezed past Cushing, 210-212.

Varsity Baseball split 4 games during the week but one of the wins was a big league victory at Tabor assuring the Hilltoppers a spot in the 4-team CNEPBL Blackburn Tournament on Saturday, May 20. Pairings and times will be determined Thursday and Brown University will be the site for the championship venue.

Softball seems to have found their hitting stride as they continue to pile up hits, runs and wins as they head down the home stretch. Seniors Maddie Murphy and Emma Crocker enjoyed a big day as the Hilltoppers rallied late to scoot past Newton Country Day School on Monday. A nice road win at Pomfret on Wednesday (8-7) had the team poised for a clean sweep as it travelled to Cushing on Saturday for a twin bill with CA (12-4 loss)  and the Governor’s Academy(22-9 win).

Track & Field teams are poised for the upcoming Class B Championships on Saturday at the host Williston Northampton School. Williston provided the opposition in a quad meet this past Saturday, and emerged victorious on the boys’ side but fell to the WA girls’ who ran away with an impressive road win. Matt Adiletta (Team MVP) won three events (100, 200 and triple jump) for the boys and sophomore Lily Dumas continues her record-breaking season with wins in the 100 hurdles, long jump, and high jump. Senior Abby Flaherty emerged with her strongest showing this spring winning both the 400 and 800m events and team MVP Christa Moore won the 100, the pole vault, and the 100 hurdles.

Grace McShea had 6 goals, Shelia Gadbois 4, and Alivia Roy 3 as the Hilltoppers hung on for a 15-13 home victory on Monday against a determined Lexington Christian Academy squad. The Pomfret School turned the tables on the visiting Hilltoppers on Saturday, however, racing past WA 13-7 despite another 4-goal performance from McShea ’19.

Seniors John Nichols-Daly and Jack Scheman closed out their home tennis careers in grand fashion with impressive wins on Saturday against Suffield Academy. The boys’ will conclude their season with a pair of road contests on Friday (Wilbraham & Monson) and Saturday (Williston Northampton).

Boys Lacrosse sandwiched a mid-week win over Beaver Country Day School around a pair of home losses to Wilbraham & Monson Academy and the Dexter School and looks to conclude a successful season on Wednesday when they host Cushing Academy at Morse Field, 3 pm.

JV Baseball team is red hot as the season comes to a halt posting big wins over Cushing Academy (10-3) and Phillips Exeter (4-1). Tim O’Connor hurled 5 scoreless innings (9K’s) against CA and JP Coughlin went the distance in the PEA win. Sophomore catcher Aidan Ormsby banged out 5 hits in the two game stretch!
