Weekly Athletic Update, 5/10/17

Boys Varsity Lacrosse continues their recent surge winning their 4th consecutive contest and running their record to 7-4 on the season. Owen Boss ’20 scored 7 goals as the Hilltoppers registered an impressive road win over the Hyde School on Saturday. Chase Orr ’19 contributed 4 assists and a goal in the 11-7 victory. Earlier in the week, WA scored impressive wins over the Eagle Hill School and Beaver Country Day School. In the 12-8 win over BCD, Chase Orr had 7 goals and Owen Boss registered 5 assists. The team will look to stretch their winning streak on Monday as they host Wilbraham & Monson School, 5 :00 pm at Morse Field.
 
On a cold, blustery afternoon suitable more for football than Track & Field, both WA teams raced to impressive victories  in a quad meet featuring PCD, Cushing, Concord Academy and the Pomfret School. Matt Adiletta continues his domination on the New England circuit winning again in both the 100 and 200m. Lily Dumas ‘19, equally impressive of late had impressive wins in the High Jump, Long Jump and High Hurdles propelling the girls’ team to victory.
 
Cold and windy spring conditions have yet deterred the spirit of our Golf team (6-1 on the season) who boast a 4-match winning streak heading into the final week of the season. The winning streak included an exciting 4.5 – 3.5 win at Kitansett Golf Club over perennial power Tabor Academy.
 
Varsity Baseball had a busy week winning 3 out of 4 contests (lone defeat to Belmont Hill School) as they gear up for the Blackburn Tournament on Saturday, May 20th. The top four teams from the CNEPBL will compete for the title in games to be played at the new Brown University baseball complex. Seniors Mariano Ricciardi and Brendan Conley continue to lead the hit parade ably assisted by Kyle Halloran and hurlers Pat Gallagher ’17 and Joe Sacco ’17 have been steady. In Saturday’s league win over Deerfield, Gallagher pitched a 1 hit gem that included 7 strikeouts as the Hilltoppers appear poised to make a late season run!
 
Despite an impressive hitting performance by Kirsten Letourneau ’20, the Hilltoppers Softball team succumbed to a 6-run 7th inning losing at Cheshire, 14-13 on Wednesday. Lawrence Academy hung on for a 13-12 win on Monday and a strong, talented Andover squad rolled past WA on Saturday afternoon at New Balance. The team concludes the season with a series of road contests in the week ahead.
 
In their lone match of the week, Girls Varsity Tennis dropped a tough 3-2 decision to NMH while Boys Varsity Tennis split two matches, defeating the Bancroft School on Tuesday (6-1) and losing to a strong Portsmouth Abbey squad (12-3) on Wednesday. Girls’ tennis is in the mix for a spring invite to the NEPSAC tournament and looks to add to their resume on Wednesday with a key home match against BCDS.
 
Girls Lacrosse dropped a pair of tough contests during the week including a 13-8 loss at NCDS (Shelia Gadbois ’18 had three goals) and a heartbreaking 16-14-road loss to Portsmouth Abbey. In the later contest, the team battled back from a 6-goal deficit, tied the game in the 2nd half  but allowed a pair of late goals to fall. The team looks to rebound on Monday afternoon as they host Lexington Christian Academy in a 5:00 pm contest at Morse Field.
 
On the sub-varsity level the Boys JV Lacrosse team played an inspired game against St. John’s High School on Wednesday dropping a 12-11 contest to the Pioneers. The teams will meet again in a rematch on Friday afternoon at St. John’s.  JV baseball hosted and lost to a talented Tabor Academy squad on Wednesday and will look to rebound as they host the Penguins from Cushing Academy at New Balance, Wednesday, May 10.
