Weekly Athletic Update, 5/1/17

The calendar has quickly turned to May and with but three weeks remaining in the spring season the countdown has begun! Unlike the fall and winter seasons, replete with NEPSAC sanctioned tournaments the Spring season (save Track & Field and Girls/Boys Varsity Tennis ) is dominated primarily by league title pursuits. Our Varsity Softball, Baseball and Crew teams (NEIRA),  all will be vying for league championships during the final weeks of May.

Varsity Baseball team is hoping a current 5-game home stand will have them revved up for a run at the CNEPBL title. The team dropped two out of three contests during the week, the lone victory (12-5) over league foe NMH on the road on Wednesday. Despite pounding out 11 hits on Friday (including a 3-for-3 effort by Jon Wolf ’17), the Hilltoppers dropped a 10-9 decision. Tabor shut down the WA bats on Saturday afternoon and left town with a 7-2 verdict. St. Sebastian’s brings the best in the ISL to Blackburn Field to start the week on Monday afternoon.

Track & Field stalwarts Matt Adiletta and Sam Hatem continue to dominate that landscape each coming away with double wins in Saturday’s quad meet at Belmont Hill School.  The boys’ team finished a respectable 3rd in the field behind host Belmont Hill and Thayer Academy.

On the girls’ side, Lily Dumas ‘19 won the 110 hurdles with a school record time of 15.99 and also came away with a win in the high jump. Mia Conte ’18 was also a multiple event winner (200m and 400m) as the girls finished in 2nd place behind meet champion, Thayer.

Girls Varsity Tennis enjoyed a fine week as they edged both the Bancroft School (5-4) and Wilbraham & Monson Academy (4-3). It was the 2nd time this season that the team has nudged W & M and a significant sweep in the doubles events proved decisive.

Crew prepares to travel to Bellow Falls, Vermont on Sunday to compete in a multiple team event. They warmed up for the trip with a solid showing on Lake Quinsigamond this past weekend finishing in 3rd place on the girls’ side and in 4th place on the boys!

Emma Crocker ’17 continues to hit well at the plate but her efforts were not enough on Saturday as Nobles made a late surge and ran away from WA 15-7.  A pivotal week lies ahead as the pitching staff will be sorely tested with 4 games in a six-day period.

In their only contest during the week Sean Chenevert’s Lacrosse team survived the nasty weather conditions in Beverly on Tuesday, however, they couldn’t keep the Waring School off the scoreboard, falling 15-11. Grace McShea led the scoring with six goals on the day!

Boys Lacrosse had a solid effort in a very physical contest at Morse Field on Friday evening and emerged with a nice win over the Hyde School.

Coach Zak Johnson’s JV Baseball team is rounding into form. Tyler Martin scored the winning (walk-off) run in the 8th inning in Friday’s 7-6 win over Noble & Greenough. JP Coughlin and reliever Tom Sasso combined to shut down the potent Nobles offense. Assistant coach Mike Carroll brought his “A” game to New Balance field on Saturday afternoon as the youthful Hilltoppers  pushed past Wilbraham & Monson.

Varsity Golf team continues their impressive season to date with a 3.5 -2.5 Match play win over the Winchendon School on Friday. The team travels to the Kitansett Course on Wednesday and will be tested on one of the regions most challenging layouts!
