Weekly Athletic Update, 4/24/17

The spring season has hit the halfway mark and we’ve already begun a countdown to May, NEPSAC, and League Championships and even graduation day for our Class of 2017.  It appears that several from this outstanding Class are intent on leaving a legacy of excellence as their performances have been spectacular and in some instances record breaking.
Christa Moore ’17 broke the Worcester Academy Pole Vault record on the girls’ side recording a jump of 10’ 7” in Saturday’s Deerfield Invitational. Christa teamed with Kailey Boltruczyk and Caitlin Hogan to secure a Gold in the Pole Vault event. Kailey joined teammates Lily Dumas and Jess Pero and with a combined jump of 13’ 10” were able to capture Gold in the High Jump event as well!
Shelia Gadbois ’18 continues her scoring spree of late pouring in 7 goals against the MacDuffie School as the Girls Lacrosse team went 3-0 on the week raising their record to 4-1 on the season. Grace McShea ’19 ably assisted Gadbois on Friday as the Hilltoppers battled the ran and cold at Morse Field, edging Beaver Country Day School, 11-9. An early week road win at the Winchendon School set the stage for the girls’ most successful week of the young season!
Seniors Pat Gallagher and Joe Sacco combined on a three hitter in Saturday’s opening game 2-1 win over Phillips Andover. In the nightcap, the WA bats remained quiet as the hometown team dropped a 6-0 decision to Andover. Jon Wolf ’17 and Asa Floyd ’20 led the hit parade on Wednesday at Deerfield in a 10-4 league victory.
Boys Varsity Tennis captured all but one match in a 6-1-road win over the Williams School in New London, Ct. on Wednesday. Girls’ tennis were equally impressive in a 5-2 home match victory over Wilbraham & Monson.  Both teams suffered rainouts on Saturday and will look to rebound as temperatures soar towards the end of the coming week.
Girls Softball is battling a bit with the injury bug and dropped consecutive games to Suffield Academy and BB & N. The team has recently joined the WNEPSSA league and will attempt to get on track towards the end of season league championship with a Wednesday contest against Newton Country Day School.
Boys Lacrosse team dropped two contests during the week, losing 12-3 to Portsmouth Abbey School and then falling to NMH on Saturday by a 7-5 count. Several bright spots have emerged with this team including the goal scoring ability of Owen Boss ’20 who scored three goals against NMH. Team will look to bounce back this Friday when they host the Hyde School , Ct. under the lights at Morse Field at 6:00 pm.
Varsity Crew continues to acclimate themselves to the conditions on Lake Quinsigamond and with boats and athletes gaining experience, the wins should follow shortly. Certainly appreciate the effort being put forth by our student-athletes and in particular to coaches Baker, Gavala and Forsberg for their persistent efforts as well.
Sarthak Mohanty’18  and Aidan Ormbsy ‘19, veterans of the JV Baseball program combined in a nice effort limiting Pomfret’s run production to a single inning, however, that number proved to one more than WA was able to muster in a tough5-4 loss on Wednesday. The boys’ bounced back with a nice effort in nearly impossible conditions on Saturday, edging Cheshire 6-5.

One of the premier Athletic highlights each year is our Varsity Club Dinner, which will take place this Thursday, April 27th in the Megaron.  It is a special night as we honor two former Worcester Academy alums that have excelled athletically and professionally. This years recipients are Caitjan Gainty ’93 and Joseph Shield ’81. We hope to have all Varsity captains and coaches in attendance to welcome our honorees back to campus!
