Weekly Athletic Update, 1/10/17

The mid-week resumption of classes made for a short window of interscholastic competition as most teams and programs attempted to get back to their practice regimens. The handful of contests scheduled for this past Saturday were canceled due to an ill-timed coastal storm that blanketed enough of the region to make travel hazardous. Friday evening afforded two of our teams the chance to compete and start the New Year!

  • The Varsity 2 Basketball team, coming off a three week break, managed to slip by the Middlesex School in overtime, 61-52. In a game eerily reminiscent of last year’s barnburner in Concord, the Hilltopers jumped out to an early lead and maintained a 29-22 advantage heading into the break. Middlesex began to solve the WA defense and whittled the lead down, eventually holding a slim three-point margin with just over four minutes to play. Defense has been the calling card for the V2 team all season and the boys were able to muster up back-to-back turnovers in the OT stanza to pull out the win. Five WA players scored 8 points or more on the afternoon and all in all a good way to start the New Year.
  • The Girls Hockey team, fresh off a tremendous showing in the Edward G. Watkins Tournament at Cushing, ran into a solid goalie and fell to the St. Mark’s School, 3-0.  Junior Miceala Sindoris was named the Most Valuable Player in the Cushing Holiday Tournament. The team travels to Exeter for a key contest Wednesday afternoon.

Athletic Tip of the Week
As a student-athlete heading toward the “dog” days of winter it is critical to revitalize and reenergize yourself. Dedication and commitment to team is critically important but you must maintain your individual passion and zest for the game you play! With team rotations "apparently” set and practices shortened due to the length of the season, it can be difficult to work your way into the starting line-up or into a more prominent role on your club! In the face of the challenges you confront as an athlete remember to be purposeful each and every day, with each and every practice, for it is through purposeful attention to detail that you prioritize, evaluate, and track your progress and this can be inherently rewarding.
