Weekly Athletics Update—February 27, 2023

The long, “regular” Winter season has concluded and for those teams fortunate enough to qualify for the NEPSAC Championships, the week ahead provides countless opportunities to carve out a special place in WA’s Athletic history. We take this opportunity to congratulate student-athletes, coaches, and our support staff for their great work over the past 3 months. There have been some amazing individual and team performances to date and the best to come may unfold during Championship week.

  • Boys’ Varsity Basketball team capped off a tremendous season (24-5 overall, 14-1 in AA) as it emerged victorious in 3 out of the 4 contests played in the final week. Certainly, Wednesday’s highlight road win at Cushing (62-54) and honoring 9 seniors on Saturday afternoon were high points of this noteworthy season. TJ Power ’23 exploded for a WA career high 31 points in the Saturday win over Tabor but the depth and selfless play of this team continues to be their calling card. Tre Norman ’23 became the latest Hilltopper to join the 1,000-point club on Friday in the win over St. George’s School. The Hilltoppers will look to repeat as Class AA champions in the playoff gauntlet that lies ahead.

  • Girls’ Basketball ran off their 5th consecutive win and the scoring prowess of senior guard, Oluchi Okananwa continues at a high clip. A road win at the Winchendon School on Wednesday (51-47), and a season-ending victory over Thayer on Senior day have the Hilltoppers ready for the opening round of play on Wednesday. Kailee McDonald (19) and Alexandra Eldredge (12) augmented the 32-point outing by Oluchi Okananwa on Saturday as WA ran their record to 18-6 on the season.

  • Boys’ Ice hockey exited the Holt Conference Tournament and saw their hopes of a back-to-back championship derailed at NYA on Wednesday by a 4-2 score. The team completes their ’22 -’23 schedule with an overall mark of 10-17.

  • Girls’ Ice hockey dropped a 4-3 decision on Friday evening to the Millbrook School and then skated to a 0-0 tie on Saturday against the Canterbury School. A neutral site 4-3 win over the Hill School on Sunday  saw the team finish the season with a 15-10-3 record.

  • JV Girls’ basketball (11-2 overall) finished their stellar year with a pair of wins over NMH on Wednesday and Thayer on Saturday.

  • 3rds basketball had an equally impressive season (12-1 overall) despite a heartbreaking final game loss at NMH by the slimmest of margins, 43-42.

  • Varsity 2 Basketball dropped a 55-30 contest at Cushing on Wednesday and lost their season finale (5-12 overall) to NMH on Saturday by a 52-47 score.
