Weekly Athletics Update—December 20, 2022
The last week of competition in 2022 was filled with multiple contests (23) as Worcester Academy teams competed at home and across the New England Prep landscape. As students, faculty and coaches looked ahead to a well-deserved respite the challenges of staying focused and in the moment were evident.
- On Wednesday, both sub-varsity basketball teams scored impressive home wins as the JV girls’ ran past the Eagle Hill School and the 3rds beat Portsmouth Abbey. It was a nice debut for Pat Flynn, now at the helm of the JV girls’ program. Additionally, Varsity swim competed against the Pingree School and came away with two victories. Girls’ won 56-38 and the boys’, 19-8. Olivia Bull ’23, Elise Drake ’27, Grace Qui ’26 and Claire Puffer were all victorious as were Keyan Padgett ’26, Hung Truong ’24 and Miles Gao ’24 on the boys’ side.
- The V2 basketball team hung on to defeat Wilbraham & Monson on the road in a low scoring 53-50 affair. Saturday mornings home game against the Wheeler School saw the Hilltoppers badly outplayed in a 55-35 defeat.
- Boys’ basketball won impressively at AA rival Lawrence Academy on Wednesday, beat Class AAA NMH on Friday eve (3rd AAA win of the young season) and dropped their 1st contest of the season on Saturday afternoon in a 68-64 loss to BCA. The team is 9-1 heading into the New Year.
- MS swim had a great 1st meet on Tuesday, edging out the host school, Eagle Hill and falling to the Rectory School in Hardwick.
- Girls’ hockey participated in the Watkins Holiday Tournament (4 games over a 3-day span) and played well, emerging 1-2-1 against a talented field. Senior Frederikke Foss scored 5 goals to go along with an assist on the weekend.
- Boys’ hockey played 3 contests in the Barber Hockey Tournament with games played at both St. Mark’s and Middlesex School. After dropping the 1st 2 contests to the Hill School and Vermont Academy the team secured a nice win in the finale to head to break on a positive note.
- Girls’ basketball travelled to Needham to play in the Nickerson Holiday Tournament at Nobles. On Friday they opened play facing Dexter for the 2nd time this season and lost. Saturday and Sunday, however, were positive results as the team ran past the MacDuffie School (Cam Rust ’24 had 21 points) and the Brooks School (Kailee McDonald a season high 29 points including 7 3-pointers) to head into the break with a 6-2 record.
- JV Ice hockey played the final contest of the week as they travelled to RI to play against RIIL power, Bishop Hendricken and emerged with a 5-0 shut out win.
