            Weekly Athletics Update—October 31, 2022

Varsity boys’ soccer continues to roll along in grand style pushing past Deerfield on Thursday (4-0) at Morse Field to start the week. On Saturday, the team travelled to KUA (Vermont) and rode a two-goal performance from Luis Baez ’23 for their 7th road win of the season. Andover will make a visit to Worcester on Wednesday with a 2:45 p.m. kick-off on Morse Field.

  • Girls’ soccer had an equally impressive week as they scored impressive wins over Hotchkiss (3-1) and Milton Academy (3-0). Lacey Mbugua scored two goals in Wednesday’s triumph and senior co-captain; Maggie Carroll added a pair in Saturday’s shut out win. Caroline Bierfeldt registered her 2nd goal of the week to close out the scoring for the Hilltoppers. The girls’ will host Exeter on Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. start scheduled for New Balance soccer.

  • Field hockey battled back from a 4-0 half-time deficit and with just over a minute remaining in regulation scored the equalizer to send the contest into OT. Unfortunately, for the 2nd time this season the OT resulted in a tough loss for the Hilltoppers, this time by a 5-4 count. On a spectacular Fall afternoon at Morse Field, WA controlled play in the entire 2nd half with some inspired play by all.  Earlier in the week, Deerfield Academy proved to be too much to handle as they sent the visiting Hilltoppers to a defeat in Western Mass.

  • The New England D II Cross-Country championships will be held at Williston Northampton on Saturday, November 12. In preparation for the course and the race that will  conclude the season, the WA cross country team enjoyed a sundrenched Saturday afternoon in Northampton competing in the prestigious Shaler Invitational. The multiple team event is a staple on the X-C circuit and the experience will serve the team well as they gear up for the NEPSAC championship.

  • The third and final contest at Morse Field on Saturday pitted the WA football team and Wilbraham & Monson Academy. Weather conditions were ideal and a sizeable crowd was on hand, but W & M spoiled the evening with an inspired performance in a 28-7 victory over the Hilltoppers. Worcester will look to bounce back on Friday evening as they play their final home contest of the 2022 season against Portsmouth Abbey School. Senior night festivities will take place prior to the 6:00 p.m. contest and we hope you will be on hand to recognize members of the 2023 class.

  • The volleyball team travelled to the Rivers School on Friday hoping to turn the tables on a team that opened the season pinning a 4-set loss on the host Hilltoppers. Friday’s match was an epic contest that went the full 5-games but once again Rivers emerged with the win. WA will travel to Marianapolis Prep on Wednesday looking to get back on track and make a final push for the season.
  • JV soccer dropped a match to NMH in Northfield on Wednesday and will look to get back in the win column this week when they travel to Andover for a 3:00 pm Wednesday tilt.

  • MS fall athletics will conclude their season this week and the games and activity have been plentiful. Cross country will compete on Tuesday in a 4:00 pm race at New Balance and both our co-ed soccer team and Flag football will play at Gaskill Field as well at 3:45 p.m. flag football had a nice performance in a win at Moses Brown and the Volleyball team split two games during the week.

Thanks to musician extraordinaire, Zoey Cheung ’26 who came directly from her Field Hockey game to the mic to offer a beautiful flute rendition of the National Anthem prior to the Football game.
