Weekly Athletics Update—October 24, 2022

With only three weeks remaining in the “regular” season several of our teams continue to jockey for play-off positioning. Currently, our boys’ soccer team is the # 1 seed in the Class A division. Our girls’ soccer team continues a recent run that has them vying for a 1st round home match. Volleyball is trying to secure an invitation to the tournament and will need a strong finish to solidify this opportunity. Our cross-country teams will automatically qualify for the New England Championships to be held on Saturday, November 12 at Williston Northampton School.

  • Congratulations are the order of the day for Mrs. Berberian and the MS Volleyball team who secured the 1st win ever in the brief history of the program at the Fay School on Monday. Eleanor DiFranco helped rally the Hilltoppers past Fay with a solid afternoon that included 12 consecutive service aces. Our MS team is having fun, enjoying the game and now is etched in the history books of Worcester Academy athletics. Thanks to Mrs. Berberian for bringing this to fruition.

  • Boys’ soccer won their 11th consecutive contest – no easy feat in the challenging Class A league – with a pair of wins during the week. They pushed past a determined Hotchkiss club on the road on Wednesday by a 2-0 count and then returned to Morse Field Saturday evening and held off Bridgton Academy. The final was 3-1 in that contest as the Hilltoppers dominated play from the start.

  • Girls’ soccer won a pair of impressive road contests racing past Deerfield on Wednesday and then followed suit with a win over Taft School on Saturday in Connecticut. Nicole Jodoin continues her fine play with a hat trick (3 goals) to propel the Hilltoppers against Deerfield.

  • Football ran into a buzz saw at Hamden Hall on Saturday afternoon. The size and depth of the hosts eventually set them apart from the Hilltoppers as they came away with a solid 28-6 victory. Worcester will look to get back on track Saturday afternoon (4:15 p.m. start at Morse Field) when they host Wilbraham & Monson Academy.

  • Cross country ran at the Emmons Course at New Balance on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon. Winchendon School and Cushing Academy joined the meet over the challenging 3.1 mile course that winds around the 36 acre parcel. Ella Budzinski won the race on the girls’ side and classmate, Harrison Martel broke the 20:00 minute mark with his 4th place overall finish. The team will gear up for the NEPSAC Championships with a race at Williston on Saturday afternoon.

  • Volleyball split two contests during the week, falling to a strong Kingswood-Oxford team on Wednesday in West Hartford and then returning to Rowe Volleyball Court for a convincing 3-set win over Williston Northampton School. The team will travel to the Rivers School on Friday and attempt to turn the tables on a team that handed them an opening match loss here in Worcester. Game time is 5:00 p.m.

  • Field Hockey is in the throes of a tough part of their schedule and dropped a pair of road contests this past week. Lawrence Academy jumped out early and beat the visiting Hilltoppers’s on Wednesday by a 6-1 count.
