            Weekly Athletics Update—October 4, 2022

Worcester Academy football put on an aerial display in the 2nd half to register a come from behind 28-23 road victory over the Berkshire School on Friday evening. QB Alexander Emery '24 was 11-19 and threw for 4 touchdowns and 255 yards, including a late 4th quarter strike that sealed the win for the 1-1 Hilltoppers. Dana Johnson (2), Tucker Welcom (1) and Keith Sarkodieh (game winner) all secured touchdown catches for Worcester Academy. The Hilltoppers will return to the friendly confines of Gaskill Field on Saturday afternoon as they host Austin Prep in the 1st ever meeting between these two programs. Game time is 2:30 p.m.

  • Boys’ varsity soccer continued to roll along as they once again dominated both sides of the ball. Five consecutive shutouts and plenty of scoring on the front line have the current edition primed and pointing towards two, big early season contests this week against Loomis-Chaffee and Avon Old Farms.

  • Our crew team travelled to the Textile Regatta in Lowell on Sunday morning and three WA boats were able to compete in the 1st ever Fall Program Race. Special thanks to all of our coaches (especially Rob Leaver who transported the boats to the race site) and to our crew athletes and families who made this a special day.

  • Six different WA players hit the back of the net on Wednesday afternoon, as the Field Hockey team ran their record to 2-1 with a convincing 6-2 win over Beaver Country Day School. Netminders Tylina Khamphavong and Zoey Cheung kept the visitors at bay with several outstanding saves during the course of the afternoon. The team returns to action this Thursday when they travel to the Winsor School for a 4:30 p.m. contest.

  • Varsity girls’ soccer took to the road this week for two games. On Wednesday, they jumped out early and secured a 3-0 win at Phillips Andover and on Saturday they settled for a 1-1 tie against Miss Porter’s School in Farmington, CT. Choate Rosemary Hall will provide the opposition on Wednesday afternoon, with a 4:00 p.m. contest slated for Morse Field.

  • Volleyball also took to the New England highways this past week and the travel did not seem to deter the Hilltoppers. On Wednesday a marathon 5-set match went the visitors way over a determined Wilbraham & Monson team. Saturday saw the team off to the Pomfret School for our annual 3 team match against the host school and Cushing Academy. WA prevailed in the opening match by a 2-1 count over Pomfret but lost the night cap by the same 2-1 margin to Cushing Academy. Makenna Eisenstock and Sam Norman were stalwarts on the day for the Hilltoppers.

  • Inclement weather caused a cancellation in Saturday’s cross country meet at Marianapolis Prep and hopefully we will find a suitable make-up date for this race. The team will host the Winchendon School on the Emmons Course at New Balance Field, Saturday afternoon, 2:30 p.m.

  • JV Volleyball lost a tough 2-1 match in Wilbraham despite 6 Service aces from Kathryn DiGeronimo ’24.

  • MS teams were also in action for the 1st time this Fall as coach Guillermo Arce led his charges against a bigger, more experienced co-ed group from Wilbraham & Monson. Despite some strong play the team came up on the short end in a well-played contest at the New Balance Field. MS Flag Football also opened their season against a very strong Rivers School club and suffered their 1st loss of the season. Finally, on a beautiful early fall afternoon, over 50 runners were ushered through their paces by the WA coaching staff (Lauren Baldwin and Amanda Goodrich) and runners from WA, Nativity School, Worcester and St. Peter’s Central Catholic ran well over the rugged route.
