Weekly Athletics Update—May 16, 2022

Varsity baseball ran off three consecutive wins as the bats seemingly are heating up again as the League tournament kicks off this coming weekend. The team concludes regular season play on Wednesday as they travel to Cushing. Seeds and 1st round opponents will be determined after Wednesday’s contests and will be posted on our website. Two walk-off wins (MacDuffie School on Monday and Dexter-Southfield on Wednesday) got the week jump started for the team and after squandering a 5-0 lead over Lawrence Academy, the team regrouped and coasted to a 9-5 over the ISL leading Lawrence Academy nine!

  • Varsity golf posted two road wins besting PCD at the Ledgemont Country Club on Wednesday (4-0) and then registered a “low” team score of 198 in pushing past the Pomfret School on Wednesday in Connecticut. The team concludes the season on Wednesday when they travel to Gardner Municipal Golf Course to compete against Cushing Academy.

  • Despite a superb 21 save effort from goalie, Sam Bilello, the girls’ varsity lacrosse team dropped an 18-5 decision against the Winsor School on Monday. Home field advantage at Morse was negated by two strong opponents (Newton Country Day and Pomfret) as the Hilltoppers competed but fell short in both contests. A 4th consecutive home contest against Winchendon on Wednesday will provide the team with the next chance to push through and into the win column again!

  • Girls’ tennis continues their great season (10-2 overall) as they ran off three consecutive wins over Cushing, Beaver Country Day and Newton Country Day) during the week. ISL school, Lawrence Academy will provide the next test as the team heads to Groton on Monday in search of yet another victory.

  • Boys’ lacrosse travelled to Connecticut (Williams School) on Wednesday and emerged with a comfortable, workman like, 10-5 win. The results at Albany Academy were not as positive as a well-schooled, determined AC squad handed the Hilltoppers their 1st loss in the last 6 games. The team travels to Cushing Academy on Monday and then concludes the ’22 season on Wednesday when they host Beaver Country Day School.

  • Lucas McCarthy ’24 nearly broke through with a win against a dominant St. Sebastian’s team but dropped a heartbreaking tiebreaker as the host Arrow’s stymied the Hilltoppers on Wednesday. Omar Saber was the lone WA competitor who registered a win on Saturday in Suffield as the host Tigers hung a 6-1 defeat on WA. Lawrence Academy will visit WA on Monday afternoon with a 4:45 p.m. start on tap.

  • A young but talented Girls’ softball team went 1-2 during the week and capped their efforts with a well-played 1-0 loss to Cushing Academy on Saturday morning in Ashburnham. The team travelled to Beaver Country Day School to start the week on Monday and secured a 9-5 win before bowing to the Westminster School on Friday. The team travels to NMH on Wednesday afternoon with a game scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

  • JV baseball dropped 3 competitive games against the “iron” of their ’22 schedule dropping 2 road games (Cushing and Belmont Hill) and a home contest to Phillips Exeter Academy at New Balance on a glorious Saturday afternoon. The team travels to the Winchendon School on Wednesday for a 4:00 pm game to wrap up their season.

  • Track & field will send 7 athletes to the Division II NEPSAC Championships at Governor’s on Saturday. All 7 have qualified with times registered in multiple events over the past two months and we wish them well! The Hilltoppers competed this past Saturday in a quad meet that was dominated by the host Williston Northampton School and St. Paul’s. Brigham Dunphy ’22 grabbed the only 1st place finish for WA on the day in the high jump.
