Weekly Athletics Update—May 9, 2022
Spree Day is Friday, May 13 as a busy spring season draws to an end. The last official day of athletic competition is Saturday, May 21. The Track & Field Championship, Girls’ Tennis Championship, the Blackburn Baseball Championship and the WNEPPS Tournament will all take place on that final day in addition to several season-ending contests for WA spring teams.
- Games have been few and far between for the girls’ lacrosse team this spring due to a myriad of reasons, so gaining traction and establishing consistency have been hard to develop. The team played a single contest during the week and dropped a 19-6 home decision to Portsmouth Abbey School. WA will look to rebound on Monday when they host the Winsor School at 4:30 p.m. at Morse Field.
- Boys’ lacrosse played three contests and won all three during the week powering past the Winchendon School, Waring (JV contest) and PCD on Saturday. Matt Milotte ’22, David Lawler ’22 and Will Masterson ’24 each scored 5 goals as the Hilltoppers ran away from an undermanned PCD squad. Earlier in the week, Ike Dutton forced 9 TO’s from his defense position in an 11-4 win over Winchendon.
- Golf ran into a very strong Dexter-Southfield team on Wednesday and dropped the contest, managing to win but a single head-to-head match on the afternoon. Thursday’s return match with Winchendon School went well as the visiting Hilltoppers pulled out a win, 213-231. JR Robinson was the Medalist in both matches for WA and came home with a 39 at the Gardner Municipal Course on Thursday.
- Varsity baseball continues to have problems on the offensive side of the plate as timely hits and game winning RBI’s have been lacking. St. Sebastian’s School rallied for 2 late runs at Polar Park on Monday (Catching Cancer Game) and slipped past WA by a 2-1 margin. Winchendon bunched some runs together in the middle stanza of Thursday’s game to win by a 3-2 count and Deerfield grabbed a home league win over the Hilltoppers by a 6-2 score, despite a 9-hit effort from WA.
- Softball evened their record at 7-7 with a 2-0 week, running past Lawrence Academy and then posting a great win over Andover on Saturday by a score of 7-6. Newton Country Day School will provide the opposition and the locale on Monday as the team looks to get above the .500 mark for the season.
- Girls’ tennis had their match at NMH canceled due to rainy conditions and dropped only their 2nd contest of the season to St. George’s School (Middletown, RI) by a 5-4 margin. The team will look to gather some momentum towards a possible tournament run with a stretch of three home matches on the horizon.
- Track & Field teams competed on Thursday (due to a Wednesday rainout ) and Saturday in a rather unusual week but had some outstanding contributions from several athletes.
WA dropped a 79-69 track meet on Thursday afternoon vs. Concord Academy but did fare well against Boston Trinity Academy (69-14) to gain a split in the tri-meet. Dante Atwood had a terrific afternoon winning the Discus, Shot Put and Javelin and also led the way in the 4 X 400 relay win for the Hilltoppers. Peter Papavisiliou '22 won the 100m and the 200m and took a 3rd place in the discus. Jordan Afonso continues his stellar season with wins in the long jump and triple jump. Peter Kamberidis '22 anchored the victorious 4 X400 relay team and won both the 800m and 1500m event. Adelaide Saint Rose '23 was a multiple winner - Discuss, Triple jump and High Jump - and took a 2nd in the Shot Put to lead the way for the girls' team who dropped a meet to CA. The team was able to grab a win (18-11) against Boston Trinity Academy in the tri-meet. On Saturday, WA's highlights on the boys' side included a 1st by Dante Atwood in both the Discuss and High Jump as well as a 2nd in the Javelin. Jorden Afonso finished 1st in the 100m, triple jump and the long jump to cap a spectacular performance. Despite a pair of 2nd place finishes by Allana Popham ’24 (Discuss and Shot Put), our undermanned team fell to Dexter-Southfield and PCD on a cool, breezy afternoon at Gaskill Filed.
- Boys’ tennis captured their 3rd consecutive victory as the top three single players (Andrey Mukhin, Nate Palumbo and Diego Simosa) led WA to a 5-3-1 win at Gaskill Tennis on Friday afternoon. The team travels to St. Sebastian’s on Wednesday for a 4:00 p.m. match.
- Junior varsity baseball evened their record (3-3) with a 5-1 win at St. Mark’s on Saturday morning. It was the 2ndconsecutive win for the team who will look to extend this streak on Wednesday when they travel to Belmont Hill for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
