Weekly Athletics Update—Feb. 15, 2022

                                                            Weekly Athletics Update—Feb. 15, 2022

The pace of the Winter season has picked up considerably and with Super Bowl Sunday in the rear-view mirror there are less than four weeks remaining to the 2022 schedule. The initial NEPSAC Winter Championship takes place on Wednesday, February 16 as our downhill ski team will compete in the Class C Championships at Mount Wachusett. The familiar terrain (host site for the CMSL) should be an asset to the Hilltoppers who are poised to bring home a high place finish in the day-long competition. On the heels of this event, the final CMSL race and festivities will occur on Friday afternoon in Princeton.

  • Boys’ varsity 2 basketball managed to squeeze four contests into a 6-day period and despite a depleted roster, they fashioned a 2-2 record with wins over BCA and NMH and loses to Exeter and PCD. A return engagement with a strong Winchendon team is the lone contest in the week ahead for the squad.

  • Varsity boys’ basketball played three contests – all on the road – and came away with a win and two losses. PEA was strong throughout and led from opening tip to the final whistle on Wednesday in New Hampshire. The Hilltoppers stymied Class AA foe, Cheshire with a solid defensive effort on Friday eve before falling to W & M school Saturday evening in Wilbraham. The team will look to gather momentum this week with two AA home contests against St. Andrew’s (Wednesday) and Cheshire (Saturday).

  • Girls’ basketball dropped a 68-64 home contest to Class AA foe, NMH and then secured a road win in New Hampshire on Saturday, pushing past PEA. St. Andrew’s will provide the opposition here on Rowe Court on Wednesday before the week concludes with a road trip to New Hampton on Saturday.

  • 3rds basketball won their 6th consecutive contest (9-1 overall) with victories over Rocky Hill School, PCD and Loomis-Chaffee and continues to impress with their depth and quality of play.

  • Girls’ ice hockey dropped a 5-1 decision to the Rivers School on Wednesday and then fell 4-3 on Saturday at the Holderness School in New Hampshire. The Winchendon School will travel to Worcester on Wednesday (4:00 p.m. start), and the week concludes with a trip to Andover on Saturday for a 12:00 noon contest.

  • The boys’ varsity Ice hockey team played to a 3-3 draw at Portsmouth Abbey School in their lone contest of the week. Presently, they are firmly in 1st place in the Holt League with some key contests looming.

  • The JV girls’ Basketball team split two contests as they fell at home to Marianapolis Prep on Wednesday (28-24) before pulling away from Exeter on Saturday for a nice road win.

  • Swim team is gearing up for the New England Championships and had two meets during the week. Winsor prevailed on Wednesday by a 56-32 count, but the Hilltoppers were able to turn the tides on Saturday in a meet with Marianapolis Prep.

  • The MS swim team dropped a very competitive meet (50-44) to a deeper Winsor squad on Wednesday and the MS boys’ basketball team ran out of steam down the stretch losing to St. Peter’s Central Catholic School on Tuesday.
