Weekly Athletics Update—Nov. 22, 2021

The Fall 2021 season has concluded with weekend contests that saw our boys’ varsity soccer team lose in the semi-finals, 1-0 to eventual Class A champion, NMH. The tightly contested contest was played in front of an enthusiastic crowd at Morse Field on Saturday morning. On the heels of a 1-0 quarter-final win over BB&N the semi-final matched two high quality teams who put forth a great display of soccer. It took a 2nd overtime to decide the game’s outcome as NMH tucked away the trip to the finals with a score in the final minute. Congratulations to the 2021 boys’ soccer team!

The girls’ team earned their 3rd trip to the finals under Coach Jen Marino with a 6-2 quarter-final win over Hotchkiss and a workmanlike 3-0 shutout in the semi-finals over Westminster. The much-anticipated rematch against defending Class A champion BB&N was set for an 11:00 a.m. kick-off at Deerfield to determine the 2021 champion. BB&N attacked from the outset and controlled play in the 1st half, jumping out to a 2-0 lead. BB&N would stretch their advantage to 3-0 early in the 2nd stanza and went on to a 5-0 win over the Hilltoppers. The 2021 team delighted our school and fan base with an extraordinary season, and we congratulate players and coaches for their efforts!

The calendar has indeed turned and our winter season officially under way as our boys’ varsity basketball team opened their season with an exciting 75-71 victory over prep power, Blair Academy on Sunday. The showcase event took place at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, Ct. before a throng of college recruiters. Senior co-captain Dan Becil was magnificent as he poured in a career-high 34 points (7-11 from behind the arc) to lead the Hilltoppers.

The action will pick up quickly when we return from break. All of us in Athletics, wish the entire Worcester Academy community a Happy Thanksgiving and look forward to an exciting Winter season.
