                                                                Weekly Athletics Update—Oct. 18, 2021

A boys’ soccer victory (2-0) over the Pomfret School got the week rolling in good fashion and the trend continued throughout a busy week for our team. Goals were difficult to come by, evidenced by Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Class A rival, Exeter and Saturday’s 1-0 loss (exhibition match) against Black Rock Academy on Saturday. Hotchkiss School will provide Wednesday’s next match as the team hosts at New Balance Field, 4:00 p.m.

    • Girls’ varsity volleyball has run off 7 out of their last 8 contests dispatching Pomfret (3-0) and Dexter-Southfield (3-1) in impressive fashion. Sydney Ryder (16 service points, 5 aces vs. Pomfret), Nina Gavin (15 kills, 8 service points vs. Dexter) and Tony Dern (14 service points, 17 assists) continue their stellar play for the surging Hilltoppers.

    • Coach Jen Marino’s talented squad continued on pace (7-1-1) rolling past the High Mowing School (5-0) on Saturday afternoon in New Hampshire. The team passed the ball beautifully and led comfortably at the half, 3-0. Ali Murphy ’22 registered her 2nd hat trick of the season and was ably assisted by Elizabeth Finn (1 goal and 2 assists), Sheridan Brummett (1 goal, 1 assist) Avery Galante (1 assist).

    • Boy’s JV soccer returned to their winning ways posting a solid 3-2 win on the road against Rectory.

    • Girl’s JV volleyball also traveled to the Rectory School and dropped a competitive match by a 3-1 score. Aliya Addo led the way with 2 aces, 1 kill and several tips as the team battled hard throughout!

    • Congratulations to coach Mikey Romeo and his varsity 2 soccer squad who secured the 1st ever win for this program in Wednesday’s 2-1 win at Dexter. Peter Kamperidis slammed home both goals and netminder, Tony Jung was strong again to earn the big win.

    • Despite a magnificent 16 save performance by Bridget Fitzgerald the young Hilltoppers dropped a road decision to a strong St. George’s School. Maribeth Fitzgerald and Ally Gray were the goal scorers for WA who will look to bounce back on Wednesday when they host Lawrence Academy at Morse Field. Game time is 3:15 p.m.

    • Savannah Nevins, Emma DeRoche and Adelaide Saint Rose all scored as the JV girls’ soccer team ran their record to 4-1 with a tidy road victory over the Winsor School.

    • The boys’ cross country team took a 3rd in Saturday’s race at Milton Academy with Ash Mohaghegh crossing the finish line 1st, while on the girls’ side, the trio of Ella Budzinski (4th), Renee Coutinho (18) and Ellianna Gelardi (19) ran well in pacing the Hilltoppers.

    • Middle School cross country continues their fine season as Lily Burke and Adam Yanco led the team in a meet against the Hillside School on Thursday.

    Around the Rim:

    • October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and WA teams will be raising money and awareness to battle this disease throughout the week. Please come out to join this very special cause and support our teams and families.

    • As our “out of season” teams gear up for their respective seasons several are immersed in sommunity service projects in and around our campus. Nice work over the weekend from our baseball and boys’ basketball teams who pitched in to dress up the perimeter of our campus.

    • Boy’s lacrosse team and coaches provided a free clinic Saturday afternoon on Morse Field to area youth and attracted over 40 kids. Great work!
