            Weekly Athletics Update—April 21, 2021

In a shortened athletics week due to a spring nor'easter, WA teams were able to get some of their scheduled contests in against the Winchendon School. Special thanks to our field staff including Howie Shattuck, Dave Fields, Rich Agbey, Jim Bria, and Justin Mahan for their tremendous work in getting our fields ready for play at Gaskill, New Balance, and Morse Field.
  • Our golf team had an impressive 218-247 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Cyprian Keyes Golf Course. Brendan Roy ’23 put together a 2 over par score of 38 to lead the Hilltopper contingent. The team returns to action this Wednesday hosting Cushing Academy in a 3:00 pm match at Cyprian Keyes.

  • Boys’ lacrosse found their collective stride and raced past the Winchendon School on a cool Saturday afternoon at Morse Field. The home team raced off to a comfortable half-time lead and never looked back as the offense created timely scoring opportunities with a crisp passing attack.

  • In what may have been the most entertaining game of the weekend, our girls’ varsity lacrosse team saw a late lead evaporate in a tough 9-8 loss to our visitors from the North County. Winchendon pushed across the winning goal with under two minutes left to this back-and-forth encounter. After trailing 4-0 in the games first five minutes the Hilltoppers battled back with a stingy defense and an opportunistic offense but came up just short as the final horn rang! Annalise Monopoli pumped home four goals on the afternoon and led the WA scoring parade.

  • In a highly anticipated doubleheader, the WA baseball team dropped a pair of contests to Winchendon on a sunny afternoon at Blackburn Field. In the opener the Hilltoppers went into an extra frame eventually dropping a 4-2 decision to a balanced Winchendon-nine. The night cap swung to our formidable opponent who jumped out early en-route to an 11-4 win. Early season prognostications proved accurate as the WA starting pitchers were impressive in limiting the offensive firepower of Winchendon. Cushing Academy will provide the weekend opposition with a Friday afternoon contest in Ashburnham, followed by a noon doubleheader here at Gaskill Field.
