Weekly Athletics Update—Feb. 15, 2021

                                                             Weekly Athletics Update—Feb. 15, 2021

Congratulations are in order for the newest member of our girls’ varsity basketball 1,000-point club as senior Bella Nascimento joined this elite group on Saturday afternoon here on Rowe Court. Bella’s 38-point afternoon—a career high—was punctuated with a late game score that pushed her over the 1,000-point milestone and her accomplishment was warmly received by coaches and teammates alike. The occasion was made even sweeter as the team was able to complete a weekend sweep of the Winchendon School. Cushing Academy will provide the opposition in the upcoming weekend series.

  • Boys’ varsity basketball impressed as well over the weekend series as they posted back-to-back wins over the Winchendon School. Both games were close and only decided in the games’ final minutes. Jhamyl Fricas ’21 led the scoring parade on Friday afternoon and junior Daniel Becil (24 points) led a host of Hilltoppers with game winning plays down the stretch on Saturday to secure the road win.

  • Winchendon’s PG dominant boys’ ice hockey team proved too big, too strong, and too experienced against a willing but youthful WA team as they skated past the Hilltoppers on successive days. The visitors took commanding leads early on in both contests and responded in kind to any push made by WA. The team will look to rebound this weekend when they face off against prep power Cushing Academy.

  • Girls’ ice hockey battled a solid Winchendon club and dropped two close games. Saturday’s 4-2 loss at Winchendon was only settled in the game’s final minute with the hosts scoring an empty net goal as the Hilltoppers pressed for the equalizer. Winchendon prevailed in Friday’s contest by a 3-1 count.

  • Scores/results from our Friday afternoon CMSL races were not reported as we went to press, but the league is up and running with four teams competing with regularity on Friday’s. Concord Academy seems to be the leagues dominant team through the early going.

  • WA swim was back in the pool on Saturday morning with a virtual race against Dana Hall. Results yet to be tabulated, but multiple PR’s reported for multiple WA swimmers.

  • Varsity 2 basketball opened their season with a pair of games against the Winchendon School falling on both occasions to our visitors from the North County.

Around the Rim:

  • WA Athletics salutes our gym staff and our maintenance crew for the work they do every day on Rowe Court. Nearly 100 chairs are set up each morning to accommodate the days academic/lunch challenges and taken down each afternoon so our Basketball teams can train. We are all appreciative and thankful for your on-going actions that may go unnoticed by many, but not under appreciated by those who frequent Daniels Gym.

  • Likewise, a shoutout to our Director of Health Services, Kelly Rizy and her staff as well as to our Sports Medicine Group (Jamie Mili, Meagan Farraher, and Brittney Bastarache) for the work they are doing as we test our school community each week. Thanks also to the nurses who oversee the PCR testing.
