Weekly Athletics Update—Feb. 8, 2021

                                                  Weekly Athletics Update

On the national front, Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers captured the Super Bowl in stunning fashion as they throttled the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs.

On the local front we were able to roll out another weekend of contests with single games played across two sports on Saturday as well as a downhill ski meet on Friday afternoon.  Two productive weeks of action will lead to this weekend’s games where back to back contests will take place against the Winchendon School. In ensuing weeks to complete the month of February teams will similarly host Cushing Academy and Williston Northampton, in a Friday-Saturday home and away scenario.

  • Our girls’ varsity basketball team has rolled out of the gates in impressive fashion as has senior leader Bella Nascimento (Manhattan College commit) who poured in 30 points in the Hilltoppers road victory over Wilbraham & Monson Academy. The crafty sharpshooter was a productive 13-19 from the field, adding 6 assists to her afternoon as her season average ballooned to nearly 27 points per game in the early going.

  • Defending Class AA champions, Wilbraham & Monson made enough plays down the stretch to ease past our boys’ basketball team by a count of 65-61. Senior Jhamyl Fricas led a balanced scoring attack with 14 points as the Hilltoppers who trailed by one at the break, fell short!

  • The girls’ ice hockey team found their stride early in Saturday afternoon’s home contest against the Pingree School and was steady throughout in registering a shutout win. Six different Hilltoppers entered the scoring column, and three goalies combined for the 1st shutout of the season. Team balance, solid senior leadership and a host of talented young skaters all point towards a bright future for this group.

  • Boys’ ice hockey was able to jump out to an early lead as well at Pingree and fashioned a well- earned 7-3 victory. Seven different scorers found the back of the net for the visiting Hilltoppers and senior net minder, Jack Byrne was solid between the pipes.

  • Nearly all of the CMSL league members were on hand to race this past Friday and our downhill racers had a good showing. Olivia Cyr and Kayzie Salmon were the top finishers on the girls’ side while Edward Jiao and Raghu Kommalapaty crossed the finish line as the boys’ top entries. Weather conditions this past week limited workouts prior to Friday’s meet so the week ahead should pay dividends for our teams.

Around the Rim:
  • Congratulations to Avery Galante ’24 (girls’ varsity soccer) who received an invitation last week to attend a US U17 National Team Camp. Exciting news!

  • Steve Scott will wear a couple of hats on Friday as he will pilot our varsity 2 basketball team in their opening contest against the Winchendon School. Game time is 6:30 PM on Rowe Court. Additionally, Steve and his student staff will continue their great work of “streaming” home contests in both ice hockey and basketball.  Check the weekly schedule for a posting of contests along with links to view!
