Spring Athletics Update

Message from Director of Athletics:

A sunny April day provides a beautiful backdrop for me to reach out to all of you. As often happens during our unpredictable Spring season, we are bracing for a snow storm later tonight that will drop an appreciable amount of snow into the region.

Normally, during this weekly athletic update we are highlighting the special accomplishments of our Spring teams and athletes. but regretfully that is not the case at this time. It is a time, however, for us to stay connected and to remain positive and focused on the immediate challenges we all face. By now we have all come to grips with the news of our Spring seasons being cancelled and I share your disappointment, especially for our great senior Class of 2020.

To date, we have enjoyed a banner year in Athletics with championship seasons and league titles on display, and there was a healthy optimism that our Spring teams were poised to continue this remarkable run. The sense of loss on missing out on an athletic season, the prom and many, many other great events that culminate each school year is powerful and palpable beyond words.

It is, however, a time that you can translate the lessons you have learned through sport to set your own course and to offer your concerns and direction in a positive fashion to those in your circle. Certainly, the notions of preparation, discipline, concern for others and willingness to serve will be called into play over the days and weeks ahead as we collectively battle the Coronavirus.

As in sport you will be challenged to respond, to not be discouraged by what we hope is but a temporary setback, and to find ways to stay connected to teammates, coaches and others who remain an important part of your extended family. I encourage you all during this trying time to continue to work wherever possible on your craft, to engage  yourself enthusiastically and fully in the educational process of distance learning and to know that better days lie ahead.

I share your disappointment and similarly feel a void as we collectively learn to deal with a spring without WA athletics, but we are now called to perhaps meet a bigger challenge and I am confident you will all rise to the occasion as you have done so well, so often before.

Warm regards,

Ed Reilly
