Weekly Athletics Update

                               Weekly Athletics Update

Another busy week in WA Athletics as we are about to close down the Winter season.

  • Boys’ ice hockey began the week with a tough outing on Monday as they dropped a contest to the Groton School. Despite out shooting Hoosac School by a wide margin the Hilltoppers couldn’t muster any offense and dropped a 1-0 decision on Saturday evening at the Worcester Ice Center. Pingree poured home 5 goals on Wednesday edging WA on the road and setting up an important week of Holt League action to determine final play-off pairings for the Holt Tournament (Friday eve and Saturday, TBD).

  • Girls’ basketball sent their seniors out on a good note in Saturday’s home finale as they raced past the New Hampton School with a 61-50 victory. Despite a 22-point effort from Bella Nascimento, St. Andrew’s prevailed over the host Hilltoppers on Wednesday afternoon. As they jockey for a home court AA quarter-final contest, Wednesday’s road contest at BCA will certainly have implications. Congratulations to the GV team for their work in promoting the Play4Kay game against New Hampton as they helped raise awareness and dollars in the fight against breast cancer.

  • Varsity 2 basketball dropped a pair of contests on the road as they fell to the Winchendon School on Wednesday (68-42) and to  Commonwealth Academy on Saturday in Springfield by a 62-41 score.

  • Freshman basketball dropped a heartbreaker to the Fenn School in their lone contest of the week despite a 25-point effort from Mav Rizy.

  • The girls’ Swim team fell to Dana Hall on Wednesday while the boys’ pushed past St. Sebs.

  • Girls’ Ice hockey dropped a pair of home contests to the Winchendon School (2-1) and to Phillips Andover by a 4-0 score. Greenwich Academy will visit WA on Friday eve for a 6:10 pm contest.

  • Judson Martindale ’20 poured in 20 points as the Hilltoppers held on to defeat league rival St. Andrew’s School on Wednesday and then followed up with an 84-79 win over a gritty Cheshire Academy team as senior Josh Ogundele led the way. The Hilltoppers pushed AAA power Woodstock Academy to the final buzzer but hung on for a 71-66 win on Sunday in the AA Showcase event.

  • JV boys’ basketball hung around for much of the game before falling to Deerfield on Saturday afternoon and will conclude their season on Wednesday when they host Cushing Academy at 3:00 pm on Rowe Court.

  • JV Ice hockey opened their play-off run with a nice victory over Lexington High School on Sunday and will face off against Hopkington High School on Sunday, 3/1 at 11:00 am.

  • On the Wrestling front senior Sam Scott went to the first ever Prep Girls’ Nationals at Lehigh University and wrestled well enough to win a match and our underclassmen faired quite well at the JV “Futures” meet on Saturday as well. Noel Gomez was 2-1 and took a 2nd while Mike Berberian was 2-2 and took 4th.  Harry Li was 1-1 and took home a 2nd place finish. Congrats to all!
