Weekly Athletics Update

                                 Weekly Athletic Update

  • Varsity wrestling senior co-captain Samantha Scott went 3-0 on the day and captured 1st place in her weight class at the Andover Invitational on Sunday. The team returns to Andover on Wednesday as they point towards the Class A Championships this weekend at the Hyde School in Maine.
  • Varsity girls’ basketball had a busy week that started with an 86-61 romp over BCA and concluded with a stirring 88-74 win over Noble and Greenough on Saturday. A mid-week 62-50 loss at Tabor still has the Hilltoppers very much in the top tier of the AA play-off picture. Bella Nascimento ’21 poured in 28 points in Wednesday’s victory over Noble as the hometown team pulled away with a strong 2nd half showing.
  • Michael Gethings ’20 continues his fine play of late as the boys’ ice hockey team went 2-0-1 on the week. A road win (3-1) at Union College over the Hoosac School got the week off and running and a good showing against Pomfret (5-5 tie) set the tone for a week ending 5-2 win on Saturday over league rival NYA. Goalies Lucas LaRoche ’20 and Jack Byrne ’21 had solid outings in the net and Owen Hughes ’21 and Rory White ’20 each pumped home 2 goals in separate games during the productive week.

  • Varsity 2 basketball had a tough week (0-3) as it played its 6th consecutive road game ringing up loses at MacDuffie School (58-52), PCD (65-57) and the Rocky Hill School (49-28). One more road game is slated for this Friday (Middlesex School) before the team returns to the friendly confines of Rowe Court on Saturday, 2/1 as they host Marianapolis Prep.
  • JV girls’ basketball picked up their 1st win of the new year as an early push (fueled by guard Talia Rassias’ 12 points) propelled the host Hilltoppers past Nobles.

  • Wilbraham & Monson Academy turned the tables on the host WA boys’ basketball team on Wednesday with a buzzer beating trifecta to win by three and send the Hilltoppers to their 2nd Class AA loss. The team responded with an impressive 2nd half defensive effort to pull away from Andover (88-78) as senior guard Judson Martindale led the way. In similar fashion WA pulled away from the Tilton School in Sunday’s Showcase event at Cushing Academy as senior center Josh Ogundele scored and rebounded in double digits.

  • Girls’ ice hockey team continues their fine run (winners of 6 out of their last 7 games) with impressive wins over St. George’s School and the Pomfret School (1-0). A 1-1 tie at Milton closed down an important week of play for the team as they battle for a high play-off seed.

  • Boys’ swim team dropped a 45-47 meet to cross-town rival St. John’s on Friday eve and our ski team’s top finisher in Friday’s Slalom event was Gabby Gavala ’20 who grabbed a 3rd place.

  • JV boys’ basketball got off to a slow start out of the gate in Ashburnham on Saturday and fell to Cushing Academy. The team looks to get back in the win column on Wednesday when they host the Hillside School.

  • JV boys’ hockey continued their winning ways in the NESC with a shutout win over Hopkinton.
