Buzzer Beater Lifts Worcester Over New Hampton

Playing host to longtime rival & NEPSAC Class AAA member New Hampton School, WA walked away with a win in dramatic fashion.

After a hot start for the home team, New Hampton edged ahead and took a 3-point lead into the locker room.  They extended it to as many as 11 as the second half wore on.

After going to a small lineup, Worcester amped up the pressure and was able to score off turnovers.  Senior guard Quest Harris (Lowell, MA) & freshman guard Kayvaun Mulready (Worcester, MA) were key in the Hilltopper defensive attack.  A 3-pointer by Mulready tied the game up at 75 with 30 seconds to play.

After a NHS layup, WA pushed the ball up the court quickly.  A missed shot went out of bounds off Worcester.  Coming out of a timeout, the Hilltopper pressure created a five-second violation, giving the ball back to the hosts.  As time expired, junior guard Jhamyl Fricas (Lawrence, MA) drained a fadeaway 3-pointer from the corner to win the game for Worcester, 78-77.

Fricas lead the way for the 8-3 Hilltoppers with a career-high 23 points (including five second-half 3-pointers).  Sophomore guard Dasonte Bowen (Boston, MA) scored 15 points, while Harris contributed 12 points.  Senior wing & Holy Cross commit Judson Martindale (Sudbury, MA) chipped in 11.

Worcester will travel to face league opponent Proctor Academy on Wednesday, 1/15.
