WA Takes the Blackburn Title in High Scoring Affair

Offense was all the rage on Rowe Court on Sunday night as the 19th annual Thomas Blackburn Tournament concluded with the hosts keeping the trophy on Providence Street. Worcester Academy defeated South Kent School 99-96. The scoring started early, as point guards Quest Harris (Lowell, MA) & Dasonte Bowen (Boston, MA) were running & scoring inside with regularity. Seniors & Holy Cross commits Judson Martindale (Sudbury, MA) & Michael Rabinovich (Hopkinton, MA) each chipped in seven first-half points, as well. South Kent came right back, and the score was tied at 46 heading into halftime. Halftime proved to be the stillest moment on the court for the rest of the night. Fast-paced action and back-and-forth scoring highlighted the half. Bowen & South Kent post-grad Wrenn Robinson each went for 22 second-half points. Bowen's layup & foul shot put WA ahead for good inside of three minutes. A key 3-pointer by freshman guard Kayvaun Mulready (Worcester, MA) & clutch free throws by Harris & junior guard Jhamyl Fricas (Lawrence, MA) sealed the game and the title for the Hilltoppers. Bowen finished with a career-high 37 points. Harris finished with a season-high 20 points, while Martindale added 18. Bowen was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, while Harris & Martindale were named to the All-Tournament Team. Worcester improves to 5-2 overall and 5-0 in NEPSAC Class AA play. They will return to Rowe Court to host Lawrence Academy on Wednesday at 3:30pm.
