Weekly Athletic Update, 10/1/19

Oskee Weekend capped off a busy week of contests for our teams. Spectacular fall weather engulfed the New England region and we had a series of delightful afternoons to watch our teams perform.

  • Boys’ soccer has hit a nice stride in the early going as its offensive efficiency appears to have risen to the level of its stellar defense. Jack Cordeiro ’20 scored in the 75th minute of play as the Hilltoppers squeaked past a determined St. Paul’s club at New Balance soccer on Wednesday afternoon. Multiple players had a hand in 6 goals tallied on Saturday as WA was able to push past Wilbraham & Monson in front of an appreciative Homecoming crowd.

  • Girls’ soccer dropped a 2-0 decision to Andover on Wednesday and settled for a 1-1 tie against Miss Porter’s School on Saturday. The home town team had several great chances to get in the win column against a talented Miss Porter’s team and will look to get back on track this Wednesday as they host Choate in a 4:00 pm contest at New Balance Field.

  • Varsity Volleyball went 2-1 during the week with a road victory at Wilbraham & Monson on Wednesday followed by an Oskee weekend split with Cushing and Pomfret. Saturday’s 1st match with previously undefeated Cushing went the Hilltoppers way as they exhibited tremendous play, however, Pomfret’s size and skill was just enough to send the Hilltoppers to a heartbreaking 3 set loss in the “nightcap”.

  • Our Cross Country teams travelled to Marianapolis Prep on Wednesday then MP returned the favor on Saturday for our Oskee Weekend as they visited the Emmons Course at New Balance field. On Wednesday, our GV team grabbed a trophy in placing 3rd (multiple team event) and our boys’ captured 7 wins (2nd place finish) on the rugged MP course. Gabby Gavala ’20 continues to lead the way for our girls’ team finishing in 2nd place on Wednesday and taking 1st place in Saturday’s home meet. Marie Wei and Amy Belliveau continue to make significant contributions as does freshman Renee Coutinho who placed 6th in Saturday’s meet. The boys’ team strength has been in the depth and quality of our top 5-6 runners, including Jack Adiletta, Cooper Dutton, Chris Maclean, Nick Manz and Steven Zhang.

  • Senior Alexis Cagan rammed home 4 goals helping to power WA past Cheshire by a 6-1 count on Wednesday afternoon. Lauren Potvin ’21 continues her fine play as well adding a pair of goals to the summary. The host Hilltoppers proved to be too deep and talented on Saturday afternoon as they pushed their record to 5-2 overall with a nice win over Marianapolis Prep. It was nice to see 1st time goals scorers – Ally Gray ‘23, Amelia Benware ‘22 and Emmy Lacourse ‘23– contribute to Saturday’s win.

  • Suffield Academy’s football team was deep, athletic and talented, forged an early lead over the host Hilltoppers and never looked back in a dominating performance at Gaskill Field before a sun drenched Homecoming crowd. Highlight of the day for the home team was senior Quest Harris’ 75-yard punt return in the second half. The Hilltoppers host Deerfield on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 pm at Gaskill Field as they look to grab their 1st win of the 2019 campaign.

  • JV boys’ soccer split 2 contests dropping a 4-2 game on Wednesday against St. Paul’s before they outlasted Marianapolis Prep on Saturday with a comfortable 3-1 win.

  • Junior Varsity football played a solid two-way game on Wednesday afternoon and powered past Doherty High School on Wednesday. There were several encouraging performances turned in by our young players!

  • JV Volleyball beat Wilbraham & Monson on Wednesday but fell in our Oskee tri-match on Saturday to both Cushing and Pomfret.

Around the Rim:

Three former Worcester Academy Football greats were honored at halftime of the Suffield game for their recognition as Bulger Lowe recipients. Steven Daniels ’12 (represented by Bob Mance ’62), David Ball ’03 and Robert Hall ’62 received the Bulger Lowe Award as the best Division I Collegiate football player during their playing days at Boston College, University of New Hampshire and Brown University respectively. It is a remarkable tribute to our Football program to have three Bulger Award winners from Worcester Academy. Congratulations to Steven, David and Bob and we thank their teammates, former coaches and friends who were able to be with us on this special day!
