Weekly Athletic Update, 5/14/19

The spring season is all but in the books as the final week of games, league championships and in the rare case, NEPSAC Tournaments will take place over the course of the next 7 days. At this time, we salute our seniors and thank them for their work and their commitment to their teams and to their respective programs.
  • Varsity Baseball continues to roll (9 game winning streak) and appears to have the # 2 seed locked down for this weekend’s CNESPBL tournament to be held at Brown University. Saturday’s opening tourney contest (opponent TBD after Wednesday games) will start at 10:00 am. Freshman John Tully knocked in the winning run on Thursday as the Hilltoppers pushed past the Dexter School in extra innings by a 5-4 count. Senior Day festivities preceded Saturday’s double header sweep of Marianapolis Prep as the team collectively gears up for the Blackburn Tournament this weekend. Congratulations to Coach Mac, his staff and the team on a great season.
  • Kudos also to 1st year coach Paul Morrison who has guided the girls’ lacrosse team to a post-season tournament. The Class B tourney will start on Thursday and run through Sunday and the team will travel to Williston for a quarter-final match at 5:00 pm. Grace McShea continued her torrid scoring spree at the Williams School on Wednesday as the Hilltoppers ran away with a 19-9 victory. Lauren Power and Gracie Bruno each scored a hat trick in the win. Pomfret put a halt to the WA win streak on Saturday as they eased to a 14-5 triumph in Connecticut!
  • Boys’ lacrosse is trying to work past a series of injuries to key players down the stretch (particularly in the midfield) and the results have been sporadic. Sandwiched around a nifty 10-4 home win over Beaver Country Day School were a pair of tough loses to talented squads from Wilbraham & Monson and the Dexter School. The team winds up their initial campaign under Coach Sumner with a 4:30 pm home contest against Cushing at Morse Field on Wednesday.
  • As expected the rainy season has chiefly impacted our tennis and golf programs with numerous contests being postponed. Boys’ tennis played the only match of the week as the wet conditions subsided enough to play Wednesday’s match against St. Sebastian’s who blanked the Hilltoppers with an impressive performance. Our girls’ team will hopefully get back on the courts this Wednesday as they travel to Pomfret for a 3:00 pm match.
  • Golf team was able to actually play a pair of matches despite the cool conditions and the matches were quite favorable as we slipped past both PCD (5-0) and the Pomfret School (4-2). JR Robinson carded a 39 to take medalist honors in the later match!
  • On one of the few nice days of the spring Track & Field hosted a quad meet on Saturday afternoon at Gaskill Field. Under beautiful conditions both teams competed hard and both finished in 3rd place. On the girls’ side, Stella Gray continued her fine season finishing 2nd in the 300m and the high jump and placing 3rd in the 100 hurdles and with our 4X400 relay team. Individual wins were captured by Coco Arcand in the 1500m and Kaitlin Barry in the Pole Vault. Nick Ng won the 300m race and will be the top seed in Saturday’s NEPSAC Championship event. Nick also anchored the victorious 4X400 relay team and finished 3rd in the 110m hurdles. Earlier in the week the teams traveled to Phillips Academy in Andover where the girls’ secured a 2nd place finish in the 5 team event. Coco Arcand finished 1st in the 3,000m and 2nd in the 1,500m while fellow distance runner, Gabby Gavala won the 800m. Kailtin Barry continued to “soar” taking 1st place again in the pole vault competition. Nick Ng and Zukudu Igwenagu were the top performers on the boys’ side as Zukudu set a PR with a toss of 148 in the Discus and won the triple jump with a leap of 41’ 11”. Ng continued his domination in the 300m race.
  • Despite a 2 hit game from senior Liv Valery the softball team fell short at the Pomfret School and again in a weekend double header with Cushing and Governor’s in Ashburnham. The season has been a difficult one in terms of wins and losses but the team has been a “fun” team to coach and to be around according to Coach Bolden and they hope to go out on a good note this Wednesday hosting NMH at New Balance at 4:00 pm.
  • JV baseball finally returned to action on Thursday, hosting Cushing Academy but came up on the short end. Phillips Exeter poured across 11 runs on Saturday in New Hampshire and managed to hold on as the Hilltoppers 7 run response was just short. Marianapolis Prep will travel to NB field on Tuesday for a 4:30 pm game as the Hilltoppers look to get back in the win column.
