Weekly Athletic Update, 4/16/2019

Cold, rainy conditions resulted in a slew of cancellations on the first day of the week but despite a rather dreary weather pattern most of our teams had a busy week of competition.

Both Track & Field teams were busy during the week travelling to Marion, Ma. on Wednesday for a tri-meet with Tabor and Moses Brown and on Saturday to Concord, NH for a quad meet with host St. Paul’s, NMH and Montrose. Our girls’ team was able to come away with an impressive win over Tabor but did not fare as well in New Hampshire on Saturday. On the boys’ side individual performances are improving with each meet but team success has yet to materialize. Congrats to our 4 X 4 relay team (Liam Nasr, Jack Adiletta, Carlton Steinberg and Nick Ng) who captured 1^st place on Saturday. Both teams will compete next weekend in the highly competitive Deerfield Relays.
Girls’ Varsity lacrosse bounced back in good fashion on Saturday with a convincing win over Beaver Country Day School. Despite a goal scoring spree from senior Grace McShea, the Hilltoppers dropped back to back contests earlier in the week falling to both Winchendon and Deerfield. A road trip and a rematch with Winchendon awaits the team on Wednesday afternoon.
In a physical match the boys’ lacrosse team was able to hang on for a 9-7 road win over Winchendon on Wednesday and kept a nice streak going with a well-played 11-5 victory over Vermont Academy on Saturday afternoon at Morse Field. Portsmouth Abbey – always tough – will provide opposition for the team in Rhode Island on Wednesday afternoon.
Varsity baseball is off to a good start in league play on the heels of some timely and impressive hitting in Wednesday’s 20 run outburst against Cushing. Asa Floyd ‘s late game triple drove in two runs as the Hilltoppers prevailed against Exeter in the opener of Saturday’s twin bill, but the hosts turned the tide in the nightcap coming away with a split in the double header. Andover will come to Blackburn Field for a much anticipated DH on Saturday with 1^st pitch scheduled for 12:00 noon.
Wayne Bolden’s softball team has faced some of the “iron” in the New England prep circuit early on and struggled to gain any momentum to date. The team looks ahead to Friday’s 4:45 pm home date with Cushing Academy to get things moving in the right direction.
Weather conditions have certainly hampered the ability of our golf team to sharpen their skills on the practice range and matches against a strong St. Mark’s team and a solid Cushing squad have the team still in search of their 1^st win of the young season. Lots of talented players and a host of young golfers has 1^st year head coach Al Vaudreui excited about the rest of the season.
JV baseball dropped their initial contest of the season on Wednesday in a 3-2 road defeat to the Dexter School. The team looks to regroup on Wednesday when they travel to Pomfret for a 3:30 pm game.
Girls’ tennis had their lone match of the week at Dana Hall washed out on Saturday and will next compete against Wilbraham & Monson at Gaskill Field on Wednesday.
Boys’ tennis split two matches with identical 9-0 scores racing past Marianapolis Prep on Saturday after falling to Moses Brown on Thursday afternoon. The team will travel to Mitchell College on Wednesday for a match against the Williams School.

Around the Rim:

It’s a great time of year to be a sports fan in New England with the Red Sox, Celtics and Bruins all playing. It is also a great time to be outside and rooting on your favorite Worcester Academy team, so please get out to a venue and make some noise cheering on one of our teams.
