Weekly Athletic Update, 1/28/2019

In and around the hoopla surrounding yet another Super Bowl run by the Patriots, the awards and accolades continue to pile up for Aliyah Boston ’19. Last week Aliyah was named All-American – the 1st in the history of our school and program – and will represent the East squad at the MacDonald’s All-American Game in Atlanta on March 27th. This award comes on the heels of Aliyah representing USA Basketball and earning two Gold Medals in the FIBA U17 World Cup in Belarus as well as the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Argentina. Worcester Academy proudly congratulates Aliyah on her accomplishments!

 - Senior captains’ Keira Fernandez and Aliyah Boston led their undefeated squad to wins over the Pomfret School and King’s-Edgehill School (Canada) during the week. Junior point guard Leilani Rodriquez reached the 1,000-point milestone in Saturday’s home victory over King’s-Edgehill and we congratulate Leilani on this accomplishment. The team has a week to prepare for Saturday’s AA showdown with NMH here at WA at 3:00 pm.
 - Swim team got into the winning column again on Saturday powering past Marianapolis Prep in both meets. On the girl’s side (51-30), Elianna Rodriquez ’20 and Anabel Szydlik ’19 were multiple event winners while Kevin Arpin won both the 200 free and the 100 free in the boys’ 46-31 win!
 - Boys’ basketball hit their 1st rough patch of the season dropping consecutive contests for the 1st time this year. Despite AA league losses to MacDuffie School at home on Wednesday and to Vermont Academy on the road on Saturday the team sits in the top 4 slot heading into the final month of the season. Sunday’s 92-72 win over Brimmer at the AA Showcase was impressive from start to finish as junior guard Quest Harris continues to impress with his play and his leadership!
 - Boys’ ice hockey seems to have found their stride as their play continues on an uptick. Despite a 2-1 setback to a strong NMH team at the WIC on Friday, the team scored impressive victories on Wednesday over Holt League opponent Pingree as well as the Academie St. Louis on Saturday evening. Junior forward Rory White had a hat trick in Wednesday’s win at the Pingree School and Saturday’s 9 goal explosion was the best output for the team to date.
 - Amherst bound Carly Daly scored 2 goals during the week pushing her to the prestigious 100-point career plateau as the Hilltoppers split two contests during the week. Wednesday saw the team play well in a 4-2 loss to the Brooks School and on Saturday they performed well in a 5-3 win over the Millbrook School. The team is off until next Sunday, February 3 when it faces off against the Winchendon School.
 - Wrestling dropped meets to both Andover on Wednesday and Lexington Christian on Saturday as Jared Bushnell was the lone winner (on a pin) in Head to Head matches against LCA. Senior co-captain Aidan Ormsby pinned his opponent t in Saturday’s “exhibition” match against LCA.
 - Our ski team raced on Friday in the CMSL at Mt Wachusett and the icy mountain conditions were too much to contend with as our racers had difficulty managing the course.
 - Freshman basketball has won three straight games as they recorded impressive back to back wins over Cushing Academy.
 - V2 hoops went 0-2 on the week dropping contests at STM on Wednesday and at home to Middlesex School on Friday evening. Senior Kevin Cox 35-point explosion against Middlesex surpassed the teams total in Wednesday’s game at STM.
 - JV boys’ continues to struggle with 2 losses during the week including Wednesday’s heartbreaking one point OT loss at the Hillside School. The team will look to rebound on Wednesday as it hosts the Groton School here on Rowe Court, 3:15 pm start.
 - JV girls’ basketball team remains undefeated as they led from tip off to the final buzzer in Wednesday’s home win over the Pomfret School.

Around the Rim:

Our Coaches vs. Cancer “Suits and Sneakers” challenge last Wednesday raised over $2,000.00 dollars and the generosity and support of our WA community was AMAZING! Thanks so much to all who contributed and supported our effort to raise money and awareness in this on-going battle against Cancer. Of the 20 or so NEPSAC schools who responded to the challenge from the New England Recruiting Report (NERR)Worcester Academy was far and away the leader in donations. Congratulations to all!
