Weekly Athletic Update, 11/6/2018
The final week of the fall season has arrived with a full slate of contests that will help decide the playoff possibilities for a number of WA teams. The 2nd Saturday in November also is the date for the start of Winter tryouts so in typical fashion WA athletes and coaches will make the transition as smooth as possible. We encourage our fall athletes to take some time in between seasons to decompress a bit and to physically recover from the rigors of their fall activities.
- Boys’ soccer won two important Class A contests as they pushed past Andover 2-0 on Wednesday out at New Balance Field and then followed that up with a physical 1-0 win over Brunswick at Morse Field on Saturday. Conditions were great for wind surfing or kite flying but hardly for playing soccer and both teams managed a tight, competitive contest in spite of the howling winds. The team will try to secure a high seed and home field advantage for the 1st two rounds of the tournament with wins this week as they square off at home against Salisbury and Cushing.
- Girls’ soccer was involved in two close contests coming away with an early week win over Milton (1-0) but then dropped a decision to Exeter (2-1) in the blustery winds of Morse Field on Saturday afternoon. The final week will be critical for post-season aspirations as the team travels to St. Mark’s on Wednesday before a season finale against Cushing on Friday afternoon.
- Senior Football players enjoyed a nice sendoff in their final home contest of their season edging Andover at Morse Field on Saturday night. Despite the cold conditions the game was played before an enthusiastic crowd and the Hilltoppers ground game eventually wore down their opponent. The 8-0 win was a testament to the resolve and determination of players and coaches who secured wins in their final two contests of the year to conclude a 3-5 season.
- Volleyball is trying to qualify for the playoffs and it appears they will need to finish with a flurry and perhaps get some help from around the NEPSAC league. A busy playing schedule (3 games in 5 days) may have been too tall an order for the team as they dropped 2 out of three contests. A 3-0 home win over Marianapolis on Wednesday was sandwiched around a pair of 3-0 losses at the hands of Lawrence and Dana Hall. Southfield School and Cushing Academy will visit Rowe Court this seek as the Hilltoppers attempt to bounce back and secure a playoff position.
- Despite two more goals (team leading numbers) from Alex Cagan the Hilltoppers fell at Portsmouth Abbey on Saturday by a 5-4 count. Tabor Academy had a bit of a hard time in the early going putting the ball past WA’s defense but over time their depth and skill wore the home team down in a 5-0 loss. Bancroft School will square off against WA on Monday at 5:00 pm followed by a Wednesday trip to St. Mark’s and then the finale at home against Cushing on Saturday.
- In nearly impossible racing conditions on Saturday, the WA girls’ team placed 5 runners in the top 8 and held off the host Pomfret School, 25-34. In the final race before the NEPSAC D II Championships at Governor’s on Saturday the depth and top tier of this veteran team will certainly rise to the occasion this weekend. Good luck to all!
- Cooper Dutton was the 1st WA runner to cross the finish line and WA was able to hold off Cushing Academy and grab a 3rd place in Saturday’s quad meet. The boys’ hope to put forth their very best as they head off to Governor’s for Saturday’s NEPSAC Championship.
- The girls’ volleyball team has played some exciting matches throughout the long year and has shown nice improvement as well. Despite dropping close contests to both Lawrence Academy and Dana Hall (mid-week win over Marianapolis) the team has much to be proud of as their season concludes.
