Varsity Club, Championships, and Recognition

Weekly Athletic Update, 10/16/2018

Girls’ varsity soccer pitched a pair of impressive shutouts on the road as it slipped past Choate on Monday (1-0) and then pushed past Marianapolis Prep on Saturday with two 2nd half goals. Liz Finn had the game winner at Choate and also scored the 2nd goal in the Marianapolis game. Samantha Scott registered her 4th shutout of the season in posting the 2-0 win on Saturday.

Varsity volleyball split two road matches during the week, dropping a mid-week contest at Pomfret before rallying for a marathon-like win over host Cheshire Academy. Saturday’s two hour plus match, punctuated by a Steph Brown “kill” saw the Hilltoppers hang on 15-13 in the decisive 5th set tiebreaker. The team travels to Kingswood-Oxford on Wednesday for a 4:00 pm match.

Myles Guerrier ’19 has discovered his scoring touch and has played an increasingly pivotal role in the Hilltopper attack of late. The senior attacker scored the lone WA tally on Wednesday as the team rallied for a 1-1 tie with Class A foe Exeter. A return trip to the Granite state on Saturday was less daunting as the team used balanced scoring in a whitewash of Tilton. A crucial Wednesday road tilt at Class A rival Hotchkiss looms for the surging Hilltoppers.

Varsity football traveled to UMASS, Amherst on Friday evening to play a neutral site contest against St. Thomas More School. In a contest much closer than the final 36-14 score would indicate the Hilltoppers played solid three-way football (Special teams included) and hung tough with a deep, talented STM squad. Zach Girardi filled in admirably for injured QB, Asa Floyd and threw his 1st career TD pass to senior wide out, Zukudo Igwengagu. Choate will provide the opposition on Saturday afternoon with a 3:30 pm game scheduled at Morse Field.

Alexis Cagan ’19 continued her torrid scoring spree as the Field Hockey team split two contests during the week. An impressive 6-2 win over the St. George’s School on Wednesday was neutralized on Saturday by a 2-0 loss to a strong Cushing Academy team. Lawrence Academy will square off with the visiting Hilltoppers on Wednesday and Southfield visits on Saturday for Oskee Weekend.

Sub-Varsity Results:

Both the Volleyball team and the boys’ soccer team split two contests during the week. Abdisalam Mohamed ’21 scored a hat trick in Wednesday’s 4-1 home win over Wilbraham & Monson. JV girls’ soccer traveled to Marianapolis Prep on Saturday and secured a 2-2 tie to offset Wednesday’s 3-0 loss at the Winsor School.
