Weekly Athletic Update, 09/17/18

Pre-season workouts are well behind our fall teams as real time contests are up and running. Special thanks to our top notch Facility and Turf managers who once again had our fields in excellent condition and our teams well equipped to start the Athletic season. Kudos also to our coaches and athletes who worked hard over the summer months in preparation for a smooth start.
  • Girl’s x-c team is out of the gate in grand fashion as they captured 1st place in the prestigious Tabor Invitational on Saturday. Senior Coco Arcand registered a PR in securing a 1st place finish and was closely followed by classmate Gabby Conte (PR) who secured a 3rd place finish, one place ahead of junior Gabby Gavala. The team travels to Williston Northampton on Saturday, 9/22 for their next meet.
  • Zhengo Rakhimbekov ’21 was WA’s top finisher on the boys’ side as he took 7th place in the Deerfield Invitational.
  • James Proctor’s Varsity soccer team ran away from BB&N (5-1) and St. Sebastian’s (1-0) to jumpstart their season with two impressive road wins. They will travel to Thayer Academy on Monday as they try to sweep the ISL portion of their schedule and then return home on Wednesday to open their home slate against Choate.
  • Jen Marino has a young squad but very capable as demonstrated in an opening 2-0 road victory at Suffield Academy on Wednesday. A talented BB&N squad turned the tables on the Hilltoppers on Saturday (2-0 loss) who will look to rebound on Monday as they host the Rivers School at New Balance Field. Game time is 5:00 pm.
  • WA’s Volleyball team got off to an exciting start as they raced past the Rivers School by a 3-0 count. Junior Angela Scumaci registered 5 aces and 7 assists to lead the hosts. BB&N will provide the opposition on Monday afternoon with a 5:00 pm start on Rowe Volleyball Court!
  • Varsity football traveled to Connecticut on Saturday afternoon to square off with Cheshire Academy. Trailing by two scores at the half, the visitors were unable to muster a consistent offensive surge over the final two quarters and dropped a 38-12 decision. Friday evenings home opener against Phillips Exeter will take place at Morse Field, 7:00 pm start.
  • Varsity Field Hockey has added some depth to their roster and was firing on all cylinders on Wednesday in their opening 7-1 victory over BCDS. The Brooks School, however, dominated play throughout Saturday’s contest and came away with a convincing 6-0 win over the host Hilltoppers. The team will host the Rivers School on Monday afternoon with a 5:00 pm start time.
  • On the sub-varsity level, our Girls’ Volleyball team tapped into their incredible team energy and came away with a terrific 2-1 win over Noble & Greenough on Wednesday afternoon before an equally enthusiastic home crowd. They will look to duplicate that performance on Monday as they host BB&N at 5:00 pm in the Old gym.

Our fall teams appear primed to have successful seasons and we encourage everyone to get out and support their efforts. Collectively as classmates, parents, administrators and faculty let’s always demonstrate to our opponents, game officials and visitors our Sportsmanship mantra:

BE POSITIVE -- BE ENCOURAGING – BE SUPPORTIVE
