Passing of Virginia 'Ginny' Rowe

It is with sadness that we inform the WA community of the passing of Rowe family matriarch Virginia B. “Ginny” Bradford Rowe, wife of legendary WA athletic director and basketball coach Donald E. “Dee” Rowe ’47.

“Ginny,” a fixture on the Worcester Academy campus since the 1950s, died July 5, 2018 after a short illness at the age of 86.  She spent many years at Worcester Academy as a beloved faculty wife and member of the residential community and returned ever more frequently in recent years as a Worcester Academy grandparent.

She and Dee have been an iconic WA couple over the years, serving as friends, benefactors, and ambassadors of WA, as well as leading the effort to raise money for the Rowe Family Scholarship and other initiatives.  Ginny regularly attended the Rowe Family Scholarship Golf Tournament, Reunion Weekends, the Varsity Club dinner, athletic events of every kind, and other special events.

President of the Worcester Academy Board of Trustees James Pietro ’81 extended his deepest condolences on her passing.

“Ginny was a rock for Dee and the entire family,” Mr. Pietro said.  “She was a wonderful mother and a very strong, supportive person. Dee couldn’t have been more fortunate to capture the heart of his fellow Middlebury College classmate all those years ago. Our thoughts and prayers are with Dee and the entire Rowe family during this difficult time.”

Robert Hall ’62, chairman of the Rowe Golf Committee, is a close friend of the Rowes.  He recalls first encountering Ginny while he was a student at Worcester Academy.

“I remember like it was yesterday—before a basketball game with Cushing—seeing this lady walk across the court with several little girls. It reminded me of little ducklings closely behind a mother duck,” Mr. Hall said.  “Fast forward, I know what a great mother and wife Ginny has been to her family.  Ginny Rowe was easily the MVP of her family, and I feel her passing should be a celebration of a wonderful life.”

In addition to her husband, Dee, Ginny leaves seven children; and 17 grandchildren, including Jesse Pelletier ’12, Aidan Collins’17, and Cormac Collins ’19.

Services will be held at Storrs Congregational Church on 2 North Eagleville Rd. in Storrs, Connecticut on Wednesday July 11, 2018 at 11:00 AM. The reception will immediately follow the service at the UConn Werth Family Basketball Champions Center on 2158 Jim Calhoun Way in Storrs, Connecticut.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the V Foundation (www.jimmyv.org), the UConn Dee Rowe Athletic Scholarship Fund (http://www.uconnhuskies.com/sports/husky-fund/spec-rel/endowments.html), and the Worcester Academy Rowe Family Scholarship (www.worcesteracademy.org/rowe). PARKING FOR THE SERVICE AND RECEPTION
There are several options for your guests attending the service and/or reception. Parking will be available in the garages.

For the church service, we will have 3 buses beginning at 10am, first staged at the North Garage stop (adjacent to Jorgensen Auditorium) that will provide service to the congregational church. Guests can also park in T Lot off of Rte 195 which is adjacent to the Towers Residence Hall and a short walk to the church.
The 3 shuttle buses will then be staged together on Glenbrook Rd (at approximately 12pm) to transport attendees following the service either back to the North garage (or South) or to the reception at the Werth Family Basketball Champions Center. The after-service shuttles will continue until approximately 1:30pm or until the last pickup is made.

At 1:45pm a single shuttle bus will again be staged on Jim Calhoun Way across from the Werth facility to return those attending the reception back to the North Garage. This service will run approximately every 15 minutes until 3:30pm.

There will be signage located at the various stops/pickup/drop points.

Guests can park in the North garage for the service at no charge and can then drive over to the South garage for the reception at Werth. Again no charge in the south garage between 9:30am-3:30pm. The gates in both the North Garage and South Garage will be locked in their up positions beginning ~9:30AM and continuing until 3:30PM to accommodate no-charge entry for service attendees.

An AVS Van will be staged in front of the South Garage to accommodate those who need accessible transport back to the North Garage following the memorial gathering.

Those needing AVS service on the day of the event can make those arrangements by calling 860-486-4991.
