Varsity Club, Championships, and Recognition

Weekly Athletic Update, 09/25/18

Worcester Academy’s football team put on an impressive display of offensive football and rolled past Phillips Exeter 44-27 on Saturday evening here at Morse Field. Junior QB Asa Floyd connected with talented wide out Zukudo Igwenagu ’19 for 4 touchdowns and senior back Zack Magdis led the way on the defensive side of the football with several timely hits and tackles. The Hilltoppers (1-1) will travel to Connecticut Saturday evening for a pivotal contest with Suffield Academy. Game time is slated for 6:00 pm.
  • Boys’ soccer team had a good week posting a solid 2-0-1 record. The week began on the road with a convincing 5-0 win over Thayer Academy and on Wednesday they followed that up with a hard-earned 2-0 win over Choate. Senior striker, Owen Schwartz had both goals in the victory. Goals were a bit harder to come by on Sunday as the team earned a 1-1 tie with NMH in a Showcase event at Loomis-Chaffee School. St. Paul’s (Concord, NH) will host the Hilltoppers Wednesday afternoon at 4:15 pm.
  • Girls’ soccer ran into a deep, talented Noble and Greenough squad Saturday afternoon on the Morse Turf and dropped a 3-1 decision. Earlier in the week they played to a 0-0 draw with the Rivers School. On Wednesday the team will travel to Phillips Andover for yet another Class A matchup. Game time is scheduled for 4:30 pm.
  • Field Hockey had a busy week as they played three contests in a 6-day span. They were able to sandwich a 6-1 win over Marianapolis Prep in and around two tough losses to the Rivers School (3-0) and Southfield School (1-0). It doesn’t get any easier this week as they travel to Cheshire Academy for a 4:00 pm contest on Wednesday.
  • Girls’ Varsity Volleyball also played three contests during the week. On Monday the team jelled nicely and shut down BB&N (3-0) but Deerfield (3-1 win) and Suffield Academy (3-1) turned the tables on the Hilltoppers who dropped back to back contests for the 1st time this season. Wilbraham & Monson will provide the opposition here at Rowe Court on Wednesday afternoon with a 3:30 pm match.
  • Coach Charlie Mull has taken over the reins of the JV boys’ soccer program and wasted no time in posting his 1st win of the season, an exciting 2-1 road win over St. John’s High School.
  • On the girls’ side, 1st year head coach Jackie Feraco saw her team rally for a 2-2 tie on the road against the Rivers School on Wednesday and then dropped a tough 3-0 match at Gasklll Field to Noble and Greenough School. The team has a week to prepare for Saturday’s 2:00 pm contest at Thayer Academy.
  • JV Volleyball won the back end of their 3 contests this week as they posted an impressive win over Suffield Academy (3-0). Earlier in the week they dropped closely contested matches with BB&N (3-0) and Deerfield (3-1).
  • Our cross country teams traveled to compete in the Williston Northampton Invitational on Saturday and as we go to press, we are still awaiting final tallies from the host school.
